Maybe Perry's Jalen Williams and Kyle Patterson were beginning to feel like their high school basketball careers were coming to an end.

Might have been the case when Skyline opened up a 44-35 lead with less than two minutes left in the third quarter of their first round 6A state tournament game.

Neither played like it late in the third period, the fourth and overtime as the senior pair combined for 61 points to nudge Perry past Skyline, 74-71, in overtime at Perry High.

The victory earns Perry (18-9) a home quarterfinal contest Tuesday (Feb.19) against No. 5 Mountain Pointe. Mountain Pointe advanced clipping No. 12 Mesa, 64-56. Skyline led most of the game at the end of the first three quarters and wasn't far from posting the only upset by seed in the first round. The Coyotes finished the season 19-8.

"Jalen and Kyle are Division I (college) guys, basketball and football and they came up big," Perry coach Sammy Duane Jr. said. "Our game plan was to get as many paint touches as we could. They took the game over for us."

Williams, who signed with Santa Clara in November, tallied a game-high 31 points. Williams connected on 6 of 9 threes to give the Pumas a perimeter presence. Patterson, who is headed to Air Force after commiting there a week ago, netted 30 points. Patterson scored 21 of his 30 in the second half. His three-point play with 2:43 left gave Perry its first lead since late in the second period - a brief one at that.

The game was sent to overtime at 61 by Skyline reserve guard Jahsir Brown with a determined layup with 11.9 seconds left in regulation.

Foul trouble, especially for Skyline's tallest player, 6-6 Tanner Poeschl, made it tough for the Coyotes to stop Patterson. Patterson made a living from the low post. Patterson scored nine of Perry's OT points and put them ahead to stay with a layup with 2:49 left in OT.

Skyline trailed 71-64 with 48 seconds left, but showed the type of resolve Perry did in its third-quarter rally. Harris' layup with 5.4 seconds left pulled Skyline within 73-71. Patterson made one of two free throws with 2.2 seconds to push the margin to three. Skyline junior point guard Dayton Harris (team-high 19 points) fired up a shot from three-quarters court that hit the front of the rim as time expired.

"We only go six deep and it hurt when our biggest guy fouled out (2:43 left in regulation)," Skyline coach James Capriotti said. "You can't measure this team's heart. The good thing is we have everyone back next year. We'll look to go farther."

Skyline nearly had all five of its starters hit for double figures. Sophomore guard Patrick Herrera scored 17 points (7 of 11 shooting, 3 threes), Freshman Dominic Capriotti had 11 and junior Tyree Tyler 10. Poeschl finished with nine points.
