Girls soccer: Millennium blanks Gilbert to reach 5A semis

There are momentum switches and then there are momentum switches.
No. 6 Millennium got the one that counted in a two-penalty kick moment in the first half of its 5A girls soccer quarterfinal with No. 3 Gilbert High and that led the Westside Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the Eastside Tigers The victory likely wasn't as harrowing as Millennium's firstr-round win 5-4 in penalty kicks after a 2-2 OT tie with Notre Dame Prep last Saturday. But it's rare to witness a PK do-over.
Millennium (20-1-1) continues the best run in girls soccer history at the school on Saturday at 5 p.m. when it battles No. 2 Casteel, a 2-0 winner over No.10 Rincon University at Coronado High School. Gilbert saw its season close with a 14-5-2 mark.
Millennium and Gilbert were scoreless at the 20-minute mark of the opening half when the Gilbert was called for a foul in the box. Millennium sent leading scorer Anacel Valenzuela-Acosta to attempt the PK. Her attempt was saved by goalkeeper Ashley Kobylinski, who three minutes earlier made another nifty stop in regular play. Gilbert's bench went wild, but died down after Kobylinski was ruled to have jumped the line early.
Millennium coach David Cameron subbed in his second-leading scorer, senior Megan Kirker, for the second try. Kirker converted and it was Millennium's turn to revel.
"I made the switch because I didn't want a second miss that can start playing with your mind on those," Cameron said. "That got us going."
Gilbert coach Ben Holzer felt the sting of that turnaround as much as his players.
"it did take the wind out of our sails," Holzer said. "We had gotten some things going early and it looked like we had the stop. There was a little bit of deliberation about the call. A bit of a delay. We had a hard time recovering from that."
Millennium bumped the lead to 2-0 early in the second half. Midfielder Maren Rice converted from about 10 yards out and Cameron took a moment to realize her shot was good.
"It hit the side of the post and I couldn't tell from my angle if it went in," Cameron said. "When I heard our girls start screaming I knew."
Gilbert was been a perennial playoff team, but hasn't reached the semis or better since 2008 when it lost in the title match to Mountain Pointe. The quarters have been their best finish a few times this decade.
"We've lost to very good teams, and given them all they could handle in a lot of them," Holzer said. "Credit to Millennium. It was a hard, physical battle."
