First round in the 3A North Regional Tournament action saw Chinle and Ganado girls win, while Window Rock and Monument Valley were victorious in boys play at Monument Valley High School's Nash Center in Kayenta.

Girls

Chinle 61, Monument Valley 58 (Overtime)

Chinle outscored Monument Valley, 9-6, in the four-minute overtime period to post  61-58 victory in the opening round of the 3A North Girls Regional Tournament.

Adriana Sheppard canned a buzzer-beater basket to send the game into overtime at 52-52.

With the victory, Chinle move on to face nemesis Tuba City in today's semifinals in Ganado High School's Hornet Pavilion at Burnside Junction, Arizona. The winner plays for the Regional Tournament Championship on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Window Rock High School Events Center in Fort Defiance.

The Chinle-Tuba City loser plays for third place at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Window Rock Events Center.

Chinle head coach Francine McCurtain said the Lady Wildcats stepped up.

"The girls did a great job," McCurtain said. "Stacey Begay and Grayce Claw did a great job. They provided the leadership."

Chinle senior post Stacey Begay scored all of the Lady Wildcats' nine points during the overtime period. For the game, Begay netted 25 points. Grayce Claw added 16 points for the Lady Wildcats.

Monument Valley head coach Jason Franklin said mental mistakes was the culprit during the Lady Mustangs' loss.

"We committed costly mental mistakes," Franklin said. "Chinle took advantage of our mental mistakes."

Senior Tayla Nez led Monument Valley with 17 points.

Girls

Ganado 63, Window Rock 47

Michelene Coleman and Jayla McIntosh stepped up to take the lead role to pace the Ganado Lady Hornets to a 63-47 victory over the Window Rock Lady Scouts.

Coleman tallied 19 points and McIntosh added 18 points for Ganado.

"It was an important win for us," said Ganado head coach Mike Bitsuie. "Michelene (Coleman) and Jayla (McIntosh) both play a solid game. Everyone stepped up and contibuted."

Jana Solee poured in 17 points for Window Rock.

Ganado faces top seeded Page today in the semifinals on Ganado's home floor. The winner advances to the Regional Tournament Championship on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the Window Rock Events Center. The loser plays for third place at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Window Rock Events Center.

Boys

Window Rock 61, Ganado 37

Senior Burk Williams poured in 20 points to pace Window Rock Fighting Scouts to a 61-37 victory over the Ganado Hornets.

Window Rock advances into the semifinals, taking on Page today. The winner advances into the Regional Tournament Championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Window Rock High School Events Center in Fort Defiance, Arizona.

The Window Rock-Page loster will play for third place on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Window Rock Events Center.

Lane Uentillie canned 14 points for Ganado.

Boys

Monument Valley 64, Tuba City 58

The Monument Valley Mustangs knocked off the Tuba City Warriors, 64-58, in the first round of the boy's Regional Tournament in Kayenta.

Monument Valley faces top seed Chinle Wildcats today in the semifinals. The winner advances to the Regional Tournament Championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Window Rock Events Center.

The loser will play for third place on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Window Rock Events Center.
