Girls hoops: Winslow Lady 'Dogs, Holbrook Lady 'Runners advance to title game

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs and the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners advanced to the championship game in separate tournament divisions of the 2018 Chandler Prep Girl's Basketball New Year's Classic in Chandler, Arizona.
Winslow (11-2) faces the Alchesay Lady Falcons (11-3) for the title game in the Platinum Division at Highly High School main gymnasium at 3:30 p.m. today.
Holbrook (13-3) meets the Tanque Verde Lady Hawks (10-1) for the championship contest in the Diamond Division at Highley High School main gymnasium at 5 p.m. today.
The 80-team girl's tournament featured five divisions - Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze - with 16 teams per division. This year a 16-team boy's division was added. The six division tournament bracket games were played in gymnasiums in Chandler and Gilbert vicinities. The tournament began Thursday and games were played on Friday. The tournaments will conclude today.
Winslow Lady Bulldogs
Utilizing its inside and outside shooting, Winslow knocked off Valley Christian, 58-33, in a semifinal game on Friday night.
"My team shot the basketball really well against Valley Christian's zone defense," said Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan.
Kylie Begay and Brianna Little canned baskets from the perimeter and from the three-point arc, while Justine Butterfield handled the scoring and rebounding inside the paint for Winslow.
Winslow raced out to a 12-7 first quarter lead. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Valley Christian, 19-10, to take a 31-17 halftime lead.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to control the game. Winsliw netted 15 points, while Valley Christian tallied 12 points in the third frame. The Lady Bulldogs increased its lead to 46-29, as the third period expired. Winslow completed the fourth quarter, outscoring Valley Christian, 12-4.
Kylie Begay poured in 21 points, while Brianna Little added 11 points and Justine Butterfield netted 10 points for Winslow.
"We had inside and outside game working for us tonight (Friday)," Jordan stated.
Jada Pourier led Valley Christian with 17 points.
Earlier on Friday, Winslow posted a 62-54 victory over Sunrise Mountain. Earlier this season at the Pepsi Invitational in Flagstaff, Winslow topped Sunrise Mountain, 61-26.
"This has been a very competitive tournament, with a lot of good teams," Jordan said.
Holbrook Lady Roadrunners
In a battle between a pair of Northern Arizona solid girl's basketball programs, the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners outlasted the Chinle Lady Wildcats, 53-44, in a semifinal game on Friday night.
"We were down by one point at halftime, but a good defense in the second half and a big game from Matehya Aberle with 17 points, helped us to the championship game," said Holbrook head coach Greg Perkins.
Matehya Aberle led Holbrook with 17 points. Talynn Spencer added 11 points and Madison Chappell tallied nine points for the Lady Roadrunners.
Earlier in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday, Holbrook knocked off 4A Buckeye, 66-58, in overtime.
Megan Cummings canned 16 points, followed by Madison Chappell with 15 points, Matehya Aberle and Tristen Ambrose both scored 12 points apiece for Holbrook.
"It was a good game and a big win against a top 10 team in 4A," Perkins said. "The girls played well."
In the first round of the tournament on Thursday, Holbrook defeated Phoenix St. Mary's, 58-19.
Madison Chappell poured in 19 points and Desirae Bain added 10 points for Holbrook.
"So far it's been a good tournament for us," Perkins explained. "I think we are improving as a team. The players are beginning to get a feel for our expectations for January and February."
