Madison Chappell and Megan Cummings stepped up with clutch performances throughout the Round Valley Tournament as the duo helped lead the young and energetic Holbrook Lady Roadrunners to the championship.

Holbrook outlasted 3A power American Leadership Academy-Gilbert North Lady Eagles, 51-44, for the tournament championship.

Earlier in the tournament, American Leadership Academy-Gilbert North edged Holbrook, 39-37.

Holbrook improved to 9-2 overall. American Leadership Academy-Gilbert North is 9-1 overall.

Chappell utilizing her ability to manuever inside the paint, was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Cummings shot well from the perimeter and three-point arc, was selected to the All-Tournament team.

Holbrook head coach Greg Perkins said he was proud of the Lady Roadrunners' outstanding performance.

"It was a good tournament for us," Perkins said. "The girls out together a couple of complete games finally. In the title game, it was our defense and three-point shooting, which got us the win. We made 10 treys, plus we got solid contributions from Matehya Aberle inside the paint."

Perkins continued, "It is nice to win over such a highly ranked team as American Leadership Academy-Gilbert North with those two Quigley sisters (5-foot-9 senior Samantha Quigley and 5-foot-10 junior Tiffany Quigley), who are tough."

Perkins said he knew if the Lady Roadrunners would get their shots and if they went in, his team would have a chance.

"My young team is starting to figure our defense, which helps," Perkins said. "Now we have to focus on more important games like Friday at Window Rock, who is obviously playing well right now with their big win over Winslow."

Megan Cummings rattled the cages for 15 points to lead Holbrook. Madison Chappell, Desirae Bain and Matehya Aberle all scored nine points for the Lady Roadrunners. Mike Joe added eight points for Holbrook.

To reach the championship contest, Holbrook knocked off St. John's, 50-35, in the semifinals.

Desirae Bain canned 18 points and Matehya Aberle netted 14 points for Holbrook.

In an earlier game, Holbrook defeated Camp Verde, 58-30. Madison Chappell scored nine points to pace the Lady Roadrunners.

Holbrook posted a 50-35 win over Alchesay. Madison Chappell knocked down 21 points and Matehya Aberle added 14 points for the Lady Roadrunners.

Window Rock 77, Winslow 58

Window Rock posted a 77-58 freedom game victory over Winslow in Don Petranovich Gymnasium in Winslow.

"Window Rock shot lights out today (Saturday) and had both the inside/outside games going," said Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan. "I do not think that my team overlooked them (Window Rock), but we were still tired from last night's (Friday) Chinle game. We had three tough games this week, Tuba City, Chinle and Window Rock. Window Rock played well at our place and deserves credit for the victory. They were the better team today (Saturday)."

After a 15-15 tie in the first quarter, Window Rock took a 32-20 lead at halftime. The Lady Scouts outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 18-16, to take a 50-36 lead at the end of the third quarter. Window Rock and Winslow shifted into overdrive in the fourth quarter, playing uptempo. The Lady Scouts scorched rhe cords for 27 points and Winsliw canned 22 points.

Five Window Rock players scored in double digits, led by Jana Solee's 22 points. Asia James and Shinezh Teller both netted 16 points, while Rachel Smiley added 13 points and Baylee Talkalai chipped in with 10 points for Window Rock.

Freshman Kylie Begay pumped in a game high 27 points to lead Winslow. Kristin Wagner contributed 14 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Winslow entertains Ganado, 3A North Region team, today (Monday) in a freedom game in Don Petranovich Gymnasium in Winslow at 6 p.m.

Window Rock hosts the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners this Friday in a freedom game in the Events Center in Fort Defiance at 6 p.m.

Page 51, Snowflake 25

Page shot well in the second and third quarters to post a 51-25 victory over Snowflake in a freedom game.

Leading by 8-4 in the first quarter, Page canned 20 points to Snowflake's six points in the second quarter, taking a 28-10 halftime advantage.

The Lady Sand Devils outpointed Snowflake, 15-5, in the third quarter, increasing its lead to 43-15 at the end of the third quarrer. Snowflake outscored Page, 10-8, during the fourth period.

Camryn Nockideneh led Page with 10 points. Miquedah Taliman added eight points, followed by Torrance Begay and Myka Taliman with seven points apiece for Page.

Kaylee Coplan tallied 11 points to pace Snowflake.

"We started off a little slow, but once we settled down and were patient offensively, things started to open up for us," Page head coach Ryan Whitehorse said. "Snowflake was quick and our girls had to adjust defensively. We increased the ball pressure and made sure we had help side and converted on their turnovers. It was an overall team effort. Everyone stepped up and played their role. After a week long break, the girls were excited to play. We took that next step as a team."

Tuba City 57, Hopi 25

The Tuba City Lady Warriors outscored the Hopi Lady Bruins in each of the four quarters to chalk up a 57-25 freedom game victory.

Tuba City led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Warriors increased its lead to 33-13 at halftime.

Tuba City held a 47-21 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Warriors netted 10 points to Hopi's four points during the fourth period.

Freshman Gracee Curley led Tuba City with nine points, followed gy junior Larissa Yazzie with eight points for the Lady Warriors. Junior Jayda Chee, sophomore Talisha Attakai, sophomore Chenille Nodman and junior Rainbow Willie all scored six points apiece for the Lady Warriors.

Jaeda Honani tallied 10 points and Kaleen Joseph added five points for Hopi.

Earlier in the week, Tuba City defeated cross town rival, Greyhills Academy Lady Knights, 68-34, in a freedom game.

Jayda Chee knocked down 16 points to pace Tuba City. Larissa Yazzie chipped in with 14 points, while Lady Warriors teammates Shiala Dugi netted nine points and Chamique Nez added eight points.

Aliya Blackhat scored 11 points and Leona Slim added six points for Greyhills Academy.
