Holbrook improved to 2-0 record in this young high school basketball season, when the Lady Roadrunners dropped the Window Rock Lady Scouts, 59-41, in a freedom game played in Tony Munoz Gymnasium in Holbrook on Tuesday night.

Holbrook head coach Greg Perkins said the Lady Roadrunners played much better than its season opener last week.

"We improved and we've gotten better since our first game last week," Perkins. "We hit key three-point baskets in the first half. We're looking to improve every time we hit the floor. We're young. We play Window Rock again at their place. They will improve. For us, it's work in progress. It was a good win."

Holbrook raced out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, behind the shooting from Matehya Aberle, Madison Chappell and Megan Cummings. The Lady Roadrunners took a 34-17 lead into the locker room for halftime, after outscoring the Lady Scouts, 19-11, in the second quarter.

Holbrook continued its hot shooting in the third quarter. The Lady Roadrunners tallied 17 points, while the Lady Scouts managed eight points. Holbrook held a 51-25 advantage at the end of three quarters. Window Rock netted 16 points to Holbrook;s eight markers in the fourth period.

Perkins praised the Lady Roadrunners' defensive effort and scoring.

"It was a good defensive effort," Perkins said. "We defended well. Offensively, we had balance scoring. Madison (Chappell) played much better than the season opener last week. Madison shot well and rebounded well."

Matehya Aberle led Holbrook offensively, pumping in 17 points. Madison Chappell and Megan Cummings each canned 14 points for the Lady Roadrunners.

Holbrook, 2-0, travels to Chinle to face the Lady Wildcats in the Wildcat Den this Friday in a freedom game at 6 p.m.

Asia James tallied 12 points and Shineza Teller added 10 points for Window Rock.

Window Rock, 0-1, entertains the Valley Sanders Lady Pirates this Thursday in a freedom game at the Event Center in Fort Defiance at 6 p.m.

Winslow 46, Page 45

Two northern Arizona girl's prep basketball powers went toe-to-toe on the floor for 32-minutes.

When it was said and done, the Winslow Lady Bulldogs edged defending 3A State Champions Page Lady Sand Devils, 46-45, in a freedom game played in Don Petranovich Gymnasium in Winslow.

Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan said the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Sand Devils played their hearts out.

"The key to our victory was we made defensive stops," Jordan said. "Our defense kept them off balance. We played 2-3 zone defense and also played man defense. We shot better at the free throw line than we did in our season opening game last week against Flagstaff."

Winslow took a two-point advantage, 13-11, at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs extended its lead to 10-points at halftime, 27-17, after outscoring the Lady Sand Devils, 14-6, in the second period.

Page played much better in the second half. The Lady Sand Devils turned the tables on the Lady Bulldogs.

Page tallied 16 points to Winslow's 12 points in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs continued to lead the game, 39-33, when the third quarter ended. The Lady Sand Devils outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 12-7, in the fourth period, but Winslow held for the win.

Kylie Begay knocked down 15 points to pace Winslow offensively. Kelli Mitchell added 11 points and Andrea Willeto scored eight points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Camryn Nockideneh pumped in 15 points to pace Page. Mikala Benally tallied 10 points and Amy Yellowman netted nine points for the Lady Sand Devils.

Page, 1-1, hosts its 2018 Girls Lake Powell Holiday Classic this Thursday through Saturday at the Sand Devils' venue. The Lady Sand Devils faces Scottsdale Saguaro at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday in the first round.

Winslow, 1-1, competes in the Pepsi Invitational in Flagstaff, December 6 to 8. The Lady Bulldogs takes on Sunrise Mountain on December 6.

Chinle 62, Pinon 22

It was daughter versus mother when the Chinle Lady Wildcats entertained the Pinon Lady Eagles in the Wildcat Den in Chinle on Tuesday night.

When the 32-minutes of action elapsed, it was daughter, Francine McCurtain's Chinle squad, emerging as victors over her mother, Nellie McCurtain's Pinon team, 62-22, in a freedom game.

"It's always a friendly or should I say a family rival, when I coach against my mother," said Chinle head coach Francine McCurtain. We're competitive by nature and we wouldn't want it any other way. I've learned plenty from my mother in coaching .... I always give her the utmost respect."

Chinle led throughout the contest. The Lady Wildcats held an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Chinle outscored Pinon, 15-10, taking a 33-17 lead into the locker room for halftime.

The Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Eagles, 23-2, in the third period, taking a 56-19 advantage. Chinle netted six points to Pinon's three points during the fourth quarter.

Brandii Clah tallied 5 treys for 15 points for Chinle. Deshawna Yazzie and Meishyla Begay each poured in 10 points, while Amaya Yazzie netted eight points and Emerald Ben canned five points for the Lady Wildcats.

"Communicating and playing through with toughness was the key .... but also keeping our composure and working on our goals as a team."

Chinle, 1-1, host the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners this Friday at 6 p.m. in the Wildcat Den.
