Preview: Marcos de Niza @ Perry

September 15, 2011 by Game Previews, AZPreps365

Last season the Aztecs and Pumas played each other twice.  The outcome: 1-1.  One win was a little more meaningful than the other.  That win was Marcos over Perry, 47-10 in the playoffs. This particular match-up began even on both sides, but as the game pressed on the Marcos offense toppled Perry to get the victory and advance in the playoffs.

This game will be a test for both teams; both outplayed two out of their last three opponents, but each has a loss in an early season test for their teams.  Marcos lost to Division II opponent Chaparral in Week 2, 24-6. Perry lost in a close game in overtime to non-division team Queen Creek 27-21.  Each team can take away several elements from these losses and apply them to this week’s game.

Perry will need to continue to attack on defense.  Bo Neely had a great game against Queen Creek with three sacks, but the entire defense will need to perform every quarter to ensure a victory. Queen Creek was able to outplay Perry in the second half, so Perry must keep their momentum going on the defensive end.

Marcos will have to stay sharp on offense.  Too many mistakes on that side of the ball cost them against Chaparral, and although they were stronger on defense, it did not make up for Chaparral being able to take advantage of several fumbles, three-and-outs and personal fouls that Marcos committed.

It’s back to Division II football this week for Marcos de Niza and Perry.  If each team can improve on their faults from losses thus far, this week’s game will be a thrill to watch.
