The Aztecs come away with top spots in the Tempe All City Meet

It was a rather warm Thursday afternoon filled with excitement, winning, and the ever-so-subtle smell of sunscreen, as the Aztec swim team made their coach proud.
“I told the kids I expected the boys to win,” coach Ron Musgrave said. “And if the girls got second that would be huge!”
And the Aztecs did just that. The boys team took first with 303 points and the girls placed second with 261. Musgrave attributes this success to the fact that many of the swimmers have improved their times.
“I feel so humble because I really couldn’t make it without such supporting friends and great coaches,” senior Dylan Edge said about getting first place.
Freshman Samantha Arredondo took home four medals herself, including one for first place in the 100-yard freestyle, which moved the young swimmer to tears.
“It was really just happiness,” Arredondo said. “The beginning of the season was amazing, but throughout the past meets I wasn’t doing as well as I thought I could.”
But being awarded four medals is enough to restore her confidence.
“We were expected to get third (place),” Arredondo said. “We pulled through and everyone did really well at that meet. It was kind of a breakout meet for everyone.”
Out of the 11 events, the boys team had seven first-place finishes, three for second place, and one for third place.
Like Arredondo, Edge also took home four medals, each for first place.
“It honestly makes me feel so proud on the inside,” Edge said. “It is great to see all of my hard work pay off, especially having people there for you and supporting you.”
