September 9, 2011 by Game Previews, AZPreps365
If it was up to the Cactus Cobras, their game versus the Peoria Panthers would have ended tonight with a win. But Mother Nature had a different plan and the game was postponed until tomorrow at 11 a.m - due to lightning.
The Cobras started the game kicking off to Peoria, but the Panthers were unable to put anything together in their first series. Cactus was sitting on 3rd and 2 on the 43 yard line and quarterback Michael Putko missed Dante Edwards down the left side and sent the punting unit onto the field. Peoria's Darius Aguirre put together a 53-yard return, but the Panthers were unable to get any closer than the 33-yard line.
Cactus dominated the remainder of the first half and after just five plays Putko ran 20 yards into the endzone to take the early 7-0 lead. The Cobras defense kept control of Peoria and took over on the 31-yard line. Putko ran the next play up the middle and was tackled by Peoria's Chris Chapman on the 34-yard line. On the next play, Jacob Schaefer caught a ball thrown underneath from Putko to earn the first down.
As the first quarter came to an end, Putko punched it in for his second touchdown on a quarterback keeper on the first play of the second quarter and improved the Cobras lead 14-0. The lightning storm began and soon after the game was delayed for 30 minutes and the teams were sent off the field, until officials postponed the game until tomorrow with 9:54 left in the first half.
