Throw out the season won / loss records.

The Chinle Wildcats (2-4, 1-0) travel to Kayenta this Friday at 7 p.m. to renew its nearby rivalry with the Monument Valley Mustangs (2-4, 1-0) in a Class 3A North Region football encounter.

Chinle is coming off a 43-18 victory over the Ganado Hornets in a region opener last Friday.

Monument Valley proved they were ready for its region contest, defeating the Window Rock Fighting Scouts, 42-24, last Friday.

Chinle head coach Alan Barwick said the Wildcats is looking forward with its ball game with Monument Valley.

"Their (Monument Valley) is not indicative of their talent level or coaching ability," Barwick said. "I am new to the region. I spent all weekend being told by various people in the community about how much this game means to them."

Barwick praised Monument Valley head coach Bryan Begay.

"Coach (Bryan) Begay is a great coach," Barwick. "MV is going to be a really tough opponent. Their linebackers play lights out. We have to stay focused if we want to get the "W"."

Begay said the Mustangs' time on the practice is limited, due to the school's parent / teacher conference. He said the Mustangs have to take whatever is available and given to the team.

"Staff-wise will are reviewing the film and watch the video together of the game and move on to Chinle," he said. "We have to do a good job in our preparation. We are making sure we get our players prepared mentally and physically. They're fresh when we get to the game. That's the challenge to balance that and make sure we get all the preparation we need."

Begay pointed out the Mustangs had a good week practice and good week of preparation for Window Rock.

"When we got into the Window Rock game, we started fast and scored quick," Begay said. "After we got up three touchdowns, we didn't carry over our touchdowns. We started to make things up and we didn't execute as a group. That's the biggest thing as an offensive front .... you have to do it as a group."

Begay said the Wildcats played well against Ganado.

"Defensively, they (Chinle) came after Ganado the entire game," Begay explained. "They're (Chinle) very fast on defense. Their linebackers aren't big. but they're really fast."

The Monument Valley coach said the Mustangs' defense has to contain Chinle's quarterback.

"I was impressed by the way he (Chinle's quarterback) threw the ball last week," Begay said. "He really improved in his ability to throw the ball throughout the season. It's going to be a great challenge for us."
