A pair of Mesa schools in transition will meet on Friday night. The Skyline Coyotes (2-0) play host to the Mountain View Toros (0-2) in a Division I game.
The Coyotes have already doubled their win total of a year ago, when they went 1-10. They have easy victories over Kingman and Phoenix Carl Hayden in the first two weeks by an average of 33 points but this should be their first real test. Sophomore Michael Amado has thrown seven TD passes in the first two weeks, including two to top returning wideout Tanner Thomas, who also is one of Skyline’s top rushers.
Meanwhile, the new regime at Mountain View is still a work in progress, according to new coach Chad DeGrenier. The Toros – who had not had a losing season in school history until last year – have had a rough start to this season. Mountain View has lost to Desert Mountain and Desert Ridge by a combined score of 82-13. Now, DeGrenier is putting in a new offense, a departure from the traditional running game that the Toro Nation is used to. And he has a sophomore quarterback, Chase Funk, running the system. He had flashes of success last week and along with little Jeff Castillo at running back did move the Mountain View offense a bit last week against second-ranked Desert Ridge.
