Almost a month ago -- Aug. 29 to be exact -- it took all Skyline had to outlast Westwood in very early regon contest in the 6A East Valley Regio. That match went five sets and Skyline had to win the final two to emerge victorious.

The rematch Thursday night was a little different. Skyline took control of every set early and went on for a sweep at Westwood. Scores were 25-16, 25-17, 25-23.

Skyline and Westwood entered play Thursday tied for second in the region at 3-1 - one game back of first-place Mesa Mesa remained perfect in region at 5-0 beating Red Mountain on Thursday and maintains a one-game lead on Skyline. The teams were back-to-back in the lastest power rankings with Westwood at No. 18 and Skyline No. 19. Skyline improved to 15-13 overall and 5-6 in power-ranking matches. Westwood is now 15-10 overall, 8-3 in prm. Skyline, however, has played a tougher schedule to date.

Skyline is led nightly on the attack by senior outside Kamaile Hiapo. The 5-foot-8 Hiapo has been needed for huge production at times, inlcuding 45 kills in the five-set win over Skyline last month. Kamaile Hiapo finished with 19 kills in Thursday's rematch. Junior outside Emma Lopez and freshman middle Demya Tate checked in with seven and five kills, respectively, in the sweep. Kamaile Hiapo is closing in on 600 kills for the season and has twice eclipsed 40 in a match.

"The difference this time was getting more from our other outside (Lopez), and making the switch from a 6-2 to one setter," Skyline coach Vee Hiapo said. ("Setter) Gabby (Green) has done a nice job spreading the ball. We're also playing a lot of tough competition. It's helping us get better.  We were at Nike last week and go to San Diego (Oct. 5-6) next month."

Westwood, led on the attack by opposite Jaidyn Brinkerhoff (eight kills) and senior middle Sydney Dastrup (five kills), was not close after the 10-point mark in the first two sets. The third set seemed headed that way, too, after an ace by Tate gave Skyline a 16-11 lead and a bit later a kill by Lopez made it 21-15.

Westwood found a spark at that point from Brinkerhoff and middle blocker Kennedy Dastrup .Brinkerhoff connected on three kills and Kennedy Dastrup back-to-back blocks and a kill that put Westwood ahead, 23-22. Skyline tied it a final time on a block from Tate and closed it out with a Kamaile Hiapo kill and double-hit call on the Warriors.

Skyline plays a rare power-ranking match on Friday to complete a busy week. The Coyotes visit Mountain View. Westwood resumes play Tuesday Oct.. 2 at Mesa High.
