The annual Nike Tournament of Champions Volleyball Invitational and 46th Doug Conley Cross Country Invitational are the highlight events in the East Valley this weekend -- Friday Sept. 21- and Saturdady Sept. 22 for volleyball and Sept. 22 for cross country.

The Nike TOC will use four venues -  PE West at Arizona State University, 451 E. Orange St., Tempe;  Salvation Army KROC Center,  1375 E Broadway Rd, Phoenix; Spiral Volleyball Center, 400 N. 56th Street, Chandler and Sun Devil Fitness Center @ ASU, 400 E Apache Blvd, Tempe.. The bulk of the top teams in the 96-team field will compete at Sun Devil Fitness Center both days.

Pool play begins Friday at 11 a.m. at all sites. Arizona schools participating: Horizon, Desert Vista, Mountain Ridge, Mountain Pointe, Xavier Prep, Hamilton, Scottsdale Christian, Sunnyslope, Millennium, Corona del Sol, Basha, Mesa High, Skyline, Ironwood Ridge, Sunrise Mountain, Notre Dame Prep, Pinnacle, Mesa Mtn. View, Chaparral, Goldwater, Campo Verde, Deer Valley, Seton Catholic, Chandler, Arcadia, Mesquite, Desert Mountain, Coconino, Morenci, Valley Christian, Dobson and Leading Edge Academy. Top teams from out of state include - Mater Dei, Santa Ana, CA; West Orange, Winter Garden, FL; Marymount, Los Angeles, CA and Walton, Marietta, GA.

Competition shifts to bracket play Saturday with some beginning at 10:30 am and others 11:30 a.m.

An early start per normal to beat the heat. The event again be held at Shalimar Country Club,  2032 E, Golf Ave., Tempe. There are six races as follows:

7:15 a.m. - Girls non-varsity; 7:45 a. m. - Boys non-varsity; 8:15 a.m - Girls Invitation.; 8:45 a.m. - Boys Invitation. 9:15 a.m. - Girls Elite; 9:45 a.m. - Boys Elite.

Last year's Elite team champs: Highland boys and Xavier Prep girls.
