Highland continued to pick up where it left off last season as an 8-4 quarterfinalist. The Hawks are clicking and thensome on offense. They averaged 23 points a game last year; 55 an outing so far this year. Pinnacle continued to roll last week with backup quarterback JD Johnson getting his first start in place of injured Spencer Rattler with a 400-yard effort (401 to exact) and four TDs. The Pioneers were expected to have an offensive juggernaut. It hasn't mattered who has been at the controls thus far. They are averaging 55 points a game with wins over 2017 final-four schools Perry and Mountain Pointe and 5A sister-school Horizon. Arizona schools were 8-6 (all conferences) in games vs. out-of-state opponents last week. Hamilton and Cibola were the 6A winners among four out-of-state contests. Hamiton's win over Arbor View Hiils NV was the first for new coach Mike Zdebski. Chandler tries to even its record in out-of-state games for the year on Saturday in Las Vegas against Faith Lutheran. Pinnacle and Mountain Pointe play their only games vs. out-of-state foes on Saturday in California and Utah, respectively. New Mountain Pointe coach Rich Wellbrock notched his first win in a triumph over Mesa Mountain View last week.

The San Tan Region has lived up to its preseason billing as the best region top to bottom in 5A. Campo Verde and Higley are unbeaten through three games while Williams Field, Casteel, Maricopa and Gilbert are 2-1. Williams Field's loss is to California power Norco and Casteel's defeat was issued by Centennial. Gilbert bowed to unbeaten Notre Dame Prep, who who looks sharp despite many newcomers replacing a senior-laden club. Maricopa's loss was a close one to Millennium (26-21), who also is unbeaten and edged Ironwood Ridge last week. One of the better, if not best, 0-3 teams around is Horizon. The Huskies losses are to Marana, Higley and Pinnacle, who are a combined 9-0. McClintock beat its longtime rival Tempe High last week, and will honor its legendary coach Karl Kiefer this week prior to its game with Central. Kiefer for some time was the state's winningest coach after he retired following the 2005 season with 308 wins. He opened McClintock in 1963 and coached there throught the 1990 season before opening Mountain Pointe the next year.

St. Mary's (1-1) at Arcadia (3-0)
Sahuaro (2-1) at Marcos de Niza (0-2)

Mingus (3-0) at Seton Catholic (2-0)
Apache Junction (1-2) at Vista Grande (2-1)
Tempe (1-1) at Flagstaff (1-1)
Arcadia remained unbeaten under new coach Kerry Taylor last week with a tougher get over Washington, 38-30. Seton has responded with back-to-back wins to open the season under late-summer appointed interim coach MIke Chiurco. Seton has two solid wins over St. Mary's and Xavier Prep (Palmdale, CA). Chiruco took over for Gary Galante in June and was an assistant for the Arizona Cardinals under Bruce Arians. Quarterback Vance Wallace has helped salve the loss of leading rusher Nick Wade to a season-ending injury by passing for 536 yards and seven TDs thus far. Mesquite is quite close to Horizon as 4A's hard-luck 0-3 team. The Wildcats have bowed to Campo Verde, Gilbert and Mingus, teams who are 8-1. Mesquite has been in every game, losing to Campo Verde and Mingus by three points .Saguaro, playing 5A Desert Mountain this week, evened its out-of-state mark for the season at 1-1 topping Helix, CA in San Diego, 28-21, on Saturday.
