#2 Chaparral remained one of three unbeaten teams in the 5A softball power rankings Wednesday afternoon by methodically taking care of #20 Williams Field, 12-1, in a five-inning, rescheduled contest at Williams Field.

Coach Mike Stoffey's Firebirds improved to 18-6 overall and are 12-0 in power ranking games.  Since competing in the championship bracket and finishing fifth at the Desert Mountain Invitational in mid-March, Chaparral has won 10 games in a row, including eight consecutive power-ranking contests.

Williams Field was trying to upend an unbeaten team in the power rankings for the second day in a row, but were in this one for only an inning. Williams Field (10-9, 6-7 prg) handed Campo Verde its first power-ranking loss on Tuesday. Williams Field is battling to qualify for postseason by staying in the top 24 of the power-rankings. 

Chaparral's bats churned away all game. The Firebirds cranked out 17 hits. They took a 2-0 lead in the first as leadoff hitter Mia Rushton set down a perfect bunt for the first baserunner. Catcher Haley Boxwell tripled -- the first of her three hits on a three-RBI day. Starting and winning pitcher Maggie Thurston added a sacrifice fly.

Williams Field's only run crossed the plate in the bottom of the first thanks to a walk to Tionna James, her steal of second and a single by Macy Kilmer. Williams Field finished with just three hits off Thurston and Hannah Ross, who tossed three and two innings, respectively.

The game was broken open in the second inning as Chaparral sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times. A pair of walks started the rally and an infield hit loaded the bases. Boxwell lined a two-run single to right and Thurston, Callie Honig and Allie Van Hoveln completed the RBI parade. Honig's hit was a two-run double.

Every Chaparral hitter contributed at least one hit. Boxwell and Thurston had three hits apiece and Rushton, Honig, Lauren Werner, and Maddie Myers added a two hits each.

Chaparral is locked again in a two-team chase for the Northeast Valley Region title with Arcadia (12-1 prg). Those teams meet today at 4 p.m. at Arcadia in the first of two meetings over the next five days. Arcadia is 5-0 in region play and Chaparral is 3-0. Arcadia and Chaparral shared the region title last year.
