It was a Brophy Prep Hoopcoming that won't soon be forgotten. By Brophy, Pinnacle or any of the fans that hung around for the final three minutes or so when Brophy seemingly had the game in the bag.

Brophy Prep"s  Jaxson Baker capped one of his bigger nights of the season with a long three at the buzzer to beat Pinnacle, 62-60, and deny the Pioneers what would have been a special victory on the Broncos' home floor.

Brophy, No. 1 in the 6A power rankings, kept its winning streak alive at 11 with the win and ran its overall record to 23-1. The Broncos started slowly, made the contest close at halftime and began pulling away in the early moments of the fourth quarter. #2 Pinnacle (18-7) saw its winning streak end at 10 games, but didn't go down without a fight with the show sophomore guard Nico Mannion put on the final 8 minutes.

Baker's game-winner came after Mannion capped a 33-point performance with two free throws with 11 seconds left to give Pinnacle its first lead since midway through the third quarter, 60-59. Mannion totaled 23 points in the final quarter, lncludng the last 21 the Pioneers scored. Mannion's near game-winning free throws (he was 13 of 13 from the line in the fourth quarter) were set up by a heady defensive play as teammate Spencer Rattler stole Ian Burke's pass at halfcourt and fed Rattler going to the basket.

That tandem play and free throws seemed to take the air out of a raucous Brophy crowd that was bracing for a disappointing defeat. The Broncos , however, got the ball up court slowly but surely. The pressure Pinnacle applied looked as though it would deny a good shot. Baker got the ball with two seconds left and let fly a trey tfrom about 22 feet hat got nothing but net and brought the student body to the floor to mob their hero.

"(Baker) got a great screen from Ben Paul on that," Brophy coach Matt Hooten said. "Ben was the one that got us going in the second quarter. He got us a couple baskets in transition and went hard to the basket. He deserves a lot of credit, too."

Baker, a senior, didn't have a bad fourth quarter either. He finished with 28 points and scored 12 in the final quarter. Baker got help offensively from Paul with 14 points. They ignited Brophy's comeback from a 15-4 deficit after the Broncos made just 3 of their first 15 shots from the field the first 10 minutes.

"I think we were able to draw on some of the other games we've had this year that were close," Hooten said. "It was one of those that whoever had the ball last was going to win it. Fortunately it was us. Nico really had it going for them in the fourth quarter."
