A peek at the first-round matchups for Wednesday in the 6A boys state soccer tournament:

#16 Tolleson (15-3) at #1 Brophy Prep (18-0-2): A rematch of last year's semifinal that saw Tolleson upend Brophy and go on to claim runner-up honors to Gilbert in the final. Brophy is one of two teams in the tourney without a loss and is highly-ranked nationally. Tolleson does not have a win against any school that qualified for state (loss to Pinnacle and tie with Trevor Browne). Recent history, however, has shown the Wolverines to be a tough out at state with more wins than losses in postseason over the last five years. Freshman Angel Ramirez (10 goals) and sophomore Kelvin Guerrero (9 goals) are the top scorers. Brophy's strong senior class (14 on the roster) has not claimed a state title. Those Broncos are digging deeper to make that happen in their final opportunity. Brophy won the Arizona Showcase and North Texas Elite Showcase at midseason. Brophy is led by seniors Carter Clemmensen, Samuel Fletcher, Tobin Shanks, and Connor McCabe and is anchored in the back by junior stand outs Deric Hall and Corbin Bernal.

#9 Highland (9-5-2) at #8 Sandra Day O'Connor (10-3-2): Highland won its play-in game knocking off defending state champion Gilbert, its top rival. The Hawks finished third in the Central Region behind Desert Vista and Corona del Sol, but didn't come close to beating either one in region play. Highland scored only two goals in its five losses and two ties.Sophomore Alex Kessler led Highland offensively with nine goals..SDO shared the Desert Valley Region title with Pinnacle and Desert Mountain. Like Highland, the Eagles aren't a high-powered offensive team. They surrendered just 15 goals in 15 games. SDO's last run at at title came in 2015 when it lost to in the final to Chandler. Senior Will Harris leads the team with seven goals.

#12 Trevor Browne (15-5-2) at #5 Pinnacle (14-5-1): Trevor Browne reached state with a 2-1 play-in game win over Perry. The Bruins own and invitational tourney win over Pinnacle (3-1) from December and managed to play reasonably well in losses to Brophy and highl-ranked 5A Independence. Trevor Browne scored a regular-season win over Hamilton in mid-December, one of its best wins of the season. They are led by senior forward Ervey Diaz (21 goals) -- two in each of the wins over Pinnacle and Hamilton. Pinnacle is led by on the attack by midfielders Shawn Grimes and Ethan Fierro and forward Dylan Stevenson. They've combined for 28 goals. Senior keeper Joaquin Rodriguez and defenders Quinn Zimmerman and Josh Heywood are the top players in the back third. Pinnacle has allowed only 23 goals.The Pioneers played top-seed Brophy tough in losing 2-1 in a power-ranking match in overtime in early December.

#13 Corona del Sol (8-8-2) at #4 Rincon/University (13-3-2): Rincon/University is hoping to get some recognition with its play at state -- a program that has made the playoffs 29 times in 32 attempts.With those appearances come three state titles and three runner-up finishes in an array of conferences/divisions. The Rangers have not played any team outside of Tucson with the exception of Kofa. They are led offensively by one of the top scorers in 6A in Zak Mohamed (21 goals and 14 assists). Sam Lossou (12 goals, 8 assists and good defender if needed) offers great versatility. Sam Walsh is the leader at midfield and the defensive stalwart is Jorge Alvarez. Corona del Sol had its highly-touted team from a year ago knocked out in the quarterfinals, the second year in a row the quarters were the end of the line. The Aztecs have gradually improved as the season has progressed. They lost the region title to Desert Vista (2-1) on the final day of the regular season. They locked up a spot at state with a play-in triumph over Copper Canyon (3-1).

#14 Mesa (11-5-3) at #3 Chandler (17-0-5): Mesa waited until the final week of the regular season to wrap up its region title and followed the next day by tying undefeated Chandler in its season finale. The Jackrabbits had to notch a play-in win and did so against Tucson to give themselves another shot at Chandler. Mesa is led by the senior triumvirate of Moises Durazo (13 goals), Danny Lopez (10 goals) and Jesus Valenzuela ( 9 goals). Chandler walked away with a the 6A title in 2015 and the last three years coach Sasha Hunter has been building toward a title run with a solid group of seniors. Jesus Garcia leads Chandler with 20 goals and 9 assists. The Wolves back line of seniors Ricardo Grijalva, Marcos Hernandez, Briant Sanchez and junior Edwin Hernandez have been outstanding (15 goals allowed in 22 matches). The Wolves are the only Arizona team to play Brophy to a draw this season.

#11 Desert Mountain (13-5-3) at #6 Sunnyside (17-3-1): Desert Mountain had no trouble punching its ticket to the state tournament taking the measure of Westview, 5-0, in its play-in game. The 13 wins are a school record for a season. Defense is the Wolves' strength led by keeper and co-captain Brock Jones (10 goals allowed in 16 games) and defender and co-captain Cole Welp, who has handed out 11 assists. Sunnyside avoided a play-in game this year and brings a defense-oriented squad to the tournament. The Blue Devils lost a play-in game to Chandler last year. Center-mid/forward Manuel Quiroz is the offensive leader with 18 goals and 8 assists and the team's best finisher. Edson Vasquez is right behind with 8 goals and 13 assists. Center-back and leader of the defense is Stephen Gonzales.

#10 San Luis (10-3-1) at #7 North (15-2-1): San Luis failed to win its region, but took care of business in beating Maryvale, 3-0, in a play-in game. They were the only Yuma school in 6A to reach the tournament as Cibola and Kofa fell in the play-in round. The Sidewinders are led by Samuel Apodaca (14 goals) and Erik Vera (9 goals, 7 assists). they have never had a losing season and been a state runner-up twice in their history. The last time was in 2015 in a D-II-title loss to Queen Creek. North won the Metro Region with a perfect 5-0 mark. The Mustangs are 11-0-1 in their last 12 games, including wins over Trevor Browne and Corona del Sol. North hasn't won a state tournament game since 2009.

#15 Hamilton (7-7-4) at #2 Desert Vista (13-4-2): Hamilton is not used to being a low seed, but the Huskies are in and can be dangerous. Previously they've never been lower than No. 9 since seeding began in 2006. Hamilton took to the road to Cibola to qualify and returned with a 4-1 play-in win over the Raiders. Hamilton is making its 11th consecutive state tournament appearance. Hamilton finished runner-up to Brophy Prep in the Arizona Showcase Classic in late December, the highlight of its season to date. Desert Vista has been one of the steadier teams this season and finished a perfect 5-0 to win the Central Region.The last two years it has been the No. 16 seed. The Thunder advanced to the semis in 205 and lost in the first round last year in OT to Brophy. Desert Vista beat Hamilton, 3-1, a couple days after the Huskies runner-up finish at the Az Showcase. Desert Vista's losses are to Brophy (two), Campo Verde and Cathedral, CA. Its ties are against Chandler and it has five victories against 6A state tourney participants.
