AIA Site Aids Students, Coaches and Community

TEMPE - The Arizona Interscholastic Association online site, otherwise known as AIAOnline.org, is a website where staff, students and fans of Arizona high schools can get all the information they need on high school sports.

The AIA started up in 1913, one year after Arizona became a state, and gradually grew into the online hub it is today.

AZPreps365.com, an extension of AIAOnline.org, specifically geared towards fans, came to life in 2014.

The website, used to provide fans with entertaining articles, video highlights, and links to web streams, originally began in 2008 as AIA365.com.

AIA365.com was mainly a site used for videos of game highlights, but slowly developed into the site it is now.

Seth Polansky, the sports information coordinator for AIA site, has taken the reigns on the site.

“We just want to get everything out there,” Polansky said. “There’s so many passionate fans out there that just want to know what’s going on.”

Polansky began working for the AIA in July when his current position was created, and along with running AZPreps365.com, he handles games of the week, works with the production company, and helps with a lot of the AIA online website.

Polansky said that a lot of the communication that comes out of the AIA channels through him personally.

AZPreps365.com works with a team of three writers that go out and get the stories to publish on the site.

“We have in-house writers, but they’re out in the field all day collecting information,” Polansky said. “It creates great content.”

AIA also works with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.

Polansky said that while they do have some independent student reporters who spend time getting stories, Cronkite is the only program AZPreps365.com directly works with.

While the partnership between AIA and Cronkite was already established when Polansky came to work, he took over aiding students in publishing work and getting experience.

“It’s been a really great experience working with the students,” Polansky said. “I know I meet some of the students at some of our games because of the assignments that they get.”

Polansky said he hasn’t seen a program like Cronkite anywhere else at this level; he’s created between 75 and 80 profiles for the students so they can get out on the field.

“This has been great,” Polansky said regarding working with the Cronkite students.

Makayla Perkins, an assistant producer at Arizona Sports 98.7, spent time doing freelance journalism for AZPreps365.com. Perkins contributed game stories, profile stories, features and any interesting content she could send to the site.

“It was a really good way for me as a starting sports journalist to get published. It was a really awesome way for me to get my name out there; get my byline on the Internet,” Perkins said. “So I really enjoyed it.”

Perkins established relationships with the staff and editors as well.

“It was really great working with their staff, too,” Perkins said. “They were really helpful and gave a lot of good feedback when they were editing my stories.”

Lauren Bailey, a student at Arizona State, spent her high school career playing soccer for Red Mountain High School. During her time on the team, Bailey took advantage of what AIA and AZPreps365.com had to offer.

“I used it mostly to look up rankings, to see where my team was at among others and to see if we were going to make playoffs.”

Bailey has two younger sisters who currently play soccer for Red Mountain who actively use the site as well.
