Chandler’s Defense Proves Too Much for Huskies
October 28, 2017 by Trej Bell, Arizona State University
Chandler and Hamilton both started the game off with touchdowns as DeCarlos Brooks opened the scoring with a 6-yard TD rush, then the Huskies responded when Tyler Shough hit Brenden Rice on a 3-yard touchdown pass.
But that was about the only things these two teams did similar all night, as the Wolves went on to score on their next three drives, while Hamilton’s offense struggled to find its rhythm.
There were opportunities for the Huskies to get back into the game as their defense forced and recovered Chandler fumbles on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter with the team trailing 29-7, but the offense failed to capitalize on the turnovers.
The Wolves on the other side did most of their damage on the ground scoring six times behind four touchdowns from Brooks and two scores from Drake Anderson.
Hamilton’s frustration on offense only intensified when the Huskies failed to score in the third quarter, and when Chandler tacked on 14 more points with 7-yard and 6-yard touchdown runs by Brooks, Hamilton was faced with a 50-7 deficit heading into the fourth quarter.
The Huskies managed another score without their starters in with a 1-yard touchdown rush by Malik Chandler to bring the score to 50-14.
“It’s a team loss, and offensively were pretty pissed about it,” Shough said. “We don’t like to only score that many points, but we just got to do our job, sometimes you just get punched in the face and you just have to bounce back from it, it’s a matter of how you respond to it”.
This was the first time all season that the Huskies offense was held to less than 27 points and just a week after scoring a season-high of 63 points, although in a losing effort, an almost complete shutdown of the Huskies offense was something almost unexpected.
A week after rushing for 297 yards and six TDs ,Jawhar Jordan Jr. failed to reach the end zone for the first time this season as the Wolves defense never seemed to give the Syracuse commit a chance to get going.
“We got worked up front," Coach Dick Baniszewski said. “Their defense does a great job and again we couldn’t get the passes off that allowed Jawhar to get loose.”
Shough for only the second time this season was held without multiple touchdown passes, as the Wolves defense was in constant pursuit of Shough sacking him several times and repeatedly disrupting the Hamilton offensive game plan.
After the game, not a single Husky head hung low as coach Dick Baniszewski brought his team together on the field pushing the motto of ‘strive and survive’ to his team as they’ll prepare for their first round playoff game next Friday.
“We’re going to give it all we got this time, you know it’s playoffs and there’s not a second chance after this so we’ve got to give it everything we got” Jordan Jr. said.
The Chandler Wolves will ride the momentum of their now six-game winning streak into the playoffs as they’ll be one of top teams heading in.
