Camelback's varsity football coach never gave up

Joseph Brissette wanted to quit football the first year he played.
“When I was eight years old, my dad signed me and my brothers up for football. That first year I hated it. The first week, we called it ‘Hell Week’. All we did was run. I told him I wanted to quit and he wouldn’t let us quit. He said, ‘You have to finish up this year and you don’t have to play again,’” said Brissette. “So, I finished off the year and by the end of the year, I couldn’t wait for the next year to start.”
Next year has turned into a parade of next years for the coach at Camelback.
Every coach coaches a team for different reasons. Brissette carved his way learning from some of his past coaches.
“The reason I coach and I didn’t always feel that it’s the reason why most coaches coach, to me you coach for more than just football. I coach not just because I want to win a lot of football games and I want to teach kids about football, but because I want to teach them to be good, positive role models of our society and to be able to contribute to it,” said Brissette. “I didn’t always feel like I got that from my coaches. It always inspired me to be able to give that to kids.”
From playing football to now coaching the fast-paced sport, Brissette has learned a lot about the role of a coach.
“It helped me to be more patient. It helped me look at life differently because prior to coaching, everything was just like a straight line,” said Brissette. “But now with dealing with kids and seeing some of the background they come from, it humbled me in a way.”
Brissette’s players look up to him as a coach.
“He’s a little hard on us,” said wide receiver Shawn Charles. But he knows what we’re going through. He wants us to win.”
Charles said how Brissette has helped him improve his mentality during a game.
Quarterback Eric Marquez talked about what it’s like having Brissette as a coach.
“He’s not just a great coach, but he’s a great man,” said quarterback Eric Marquez. “He has a great personality. All of the players enjoy being around him since he’s such a great person. Coach Brissette has given me some good advice. He has told me that for every mistake you make, there is going to be something good out of it. He’s also told us to keep our heads up through the good and the bad.”
