The Mesa Jackrabbits swept the Dobson Mustangs for Senior Night Tuesday 3-0 in a Class 6A East Valley Region matchup
On the last regular season match of the season and of their high school careers, the senior Jackrabbits were able to get past Dobson and look forward to their state play-in match Thursday.
“It’ll be a little emotional letdown tonight,” Mesa Coach Amy Strawn said. “So emotional for the girls. It’s hard and then Thursday we just kind of have to second season mentality of ‘here we go.’ ”
Senior middle blocker and opposite hitter Harley Cummard felt some sorrow Tuesday with it being her last regular season game in high school, but is looking forward to the state play-in match Thursday
“It was a great feeling,” Cummard said. “It’s sad to leave and everything, but I’m ready for playoffs and everything, so we’ll come back and win it.”
Hoping for a chance at the post season, Dobson came into the game ranked 23 in Class 6A, which would allow them to compete in a state play-in match Thursday. The loss tonight to Mesa may have diminished their postseason hopes, but the state play-in match schedule comes out Wednesday.
“It’s going to be close,” Dobson coach Will Robinson said. “Right now, we’re the 23 seed and the top 24 go, so losing tonight, I don’t know what will happen it’ll be really close.”
Dobson finished the season 16-23 overall with a 5-5 region record and Mesa completes its season 30-10 overall with a 9-1 region record.
