Division II: Oct. 23-24
The Division II state championships got off to a great start on Monday at the OMNI Tucson National with several impressive rounds resulting in ties on both sides.
On the girl’s side, Salpointe standout Alexandra Quihuis and Catalina Foothills standout Mya Benita shot a 4-under 67 on the Sonoran Course with defending state champion Kelly Su of Chaparral coming in one stroke back at 68.
Blake Lorenz (Sunrise Mountain), Jake Goode (Catalina Foothills) and Tucker Clark (Arcadia) came into the clubhouse with a three-way tie, shooting an impressive 5-under 68 on the Catalina Course.
As a team, the boy’s race is too close to call after the first round with Arcadia clinging to a 5-shot lead over Canyon del Oro 288 (-4) to 293. The only race that appears to out of reach would be on the girl’s side with defending champion Cactus Shadows leading the field by 15 strokes, but Tuesday is another day, and anything can happen.
