Malik Fitch and Port of Subs

October 17, 2017 by Millard Thomas, Arizona State University

Thanks to Malik Fitch and Port of Subs, the Tempe High School football team never goes hungry.

On average, a 200-pound player burns about 438 calories every 30 minutes playing football.

That demands energy.

Fitch was an employee at Port of Subs. While he worked there, he wanted to help his team out and make sure everyone was fed. He asked the marketing manager if she could help out. Port of Subs agreed to donate to Fitch, but he wanted them to donate to the team directly.

“He’s not a selfish young man,” Liza Fitch (mother of Malik) said. “Instead of saying, ‘Me, me, me, I can do for myself.’ He would have rather it go for his team.”

Fitch was saving up money from his own paycheck to help out his team.

“Some of the boys only get to eat at lunch.” Liza Fitch said.

Nobody on the team takes what they are getting for granted. They know how lucky that Port of Subs is one of the sponsors that provides food no matter what the score or record of the team is.

“You have to be blessed that you are able to eat. Some people in the world don’t have food ,” sophomore Elijiah Cason said.

Because of Malik Port of Subs now provides food for the whole team, from the freshman level all the way to the varsity.

“Thankfully, everything worked out,” Malik said.
