Betty Fairfax scored a 20-25, 12-25, 16-25 volleyball win Wednesday at Alhambra in the Lions'  first home conference match of the year.

Senior setter Areianne Meza opened the first set with an ace, and the Lions were quick to rack up three points. Fairfax wasted no time to come back, scoring three points of its own to tie the set. Alhambra led for most of the set, but Fairfax ultimately tied the set up at 19 and closed it put with a 25-20 win.

Fairfax led the entire second set which included an eight-point, unanswered run. Alhambra fought hard by inducing multiple rallies throughout the set, but Fairfax came up with the point each time. Multiple Fairfax players had multiple aces in the set, including junior setter Aniston Biel who finished with three aces. Fairfax easily finished out the set with a 25-12 win.

Despite trailing all the second set, Alhambra head coach Josh Olshan thought his team played its best in that set. 

“We played very well. It was a very competitive game, but they are too good of a team to play against where if you don’t play your best, you’re going to struggle," Olshan said.

Fairfax dominated the third and final set, closing out the match strong. Alhambra looked tired and had to play catchup the whole set.

The Lions tried to rally late in the match, scoring five points quickly, but they were unable to complete the comeback. Fairfax won the set 25-16 and secured the victory.

The Lions fell to 1-3 (0-2 conference) on the season.

The Lions recorded 24 receiving errors, and Olshan said, “The main thing is we just need to get a little more consistent with our serve-receive passing. They went on a bunch of service runs, and we struggled with that.”

Meza had a powerful game with six aces, one dig and two assists. Senior middle blocker Amier Maker had two kills and was the only Lion to record a block in the match.

Olshan was pleased with his team’s effort. “You know we didn’t play our best, but we played volleyball the right way,” he said. “We had good effort, I always tell my girls they can only control their attitude and effort, and they did a good job on both of those.”

“I think that we had some really good moments, but at times we got really down. That’s something we can work on. Overall, we have really progressed over the year, so I’m really proud," Meza said.

“I think we did good, we just need to work on communication and work on being together as a team, not as individuals,” Maker said.
The Lions head to South Mountain Tuesday in their next match.
