A memorial service will be held in the Valley in August for former Mesa High and Westwood football and track coach Dave Gates. Gates passed away July 13, 2017 in Texas. He was 98.

Gates coached at Mesa High and Westwood HIgh, serving as head track coach at Mesa High and Westwood. He piloted a championship boys track team at Westwood in 1962. He was also head football coach at Westwood High from 1967-73 posting a 55-21 record in that span.

The memorial service for Gates is set for Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. at the Ahwatukee Recreational Center, 5001 E. Cheyenne Drive in Phoenix. Gates lived in Ahwatukee in the the final years of his life before moving to Texas.
