The 5A-II Conference is entering its final week of existence and the Perry High baseball team would like to etch its name in the six-year history of said conference.
Perry, the No. 12 seed in this year's 5A-II state tournament, has won its first three games and is one of two unbeaten teams (No. 2 Chaparral is the other) heading to Thursday's play. Perry will either face Boulder Creek or Millennium on Thursday and only losing twice to that survivor would prevent the Pumas from reaching Saturday's 7 p.m. title game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Perry, coached by Shane Hilstrom, has clicked on all cylinders in the postseason, led by its pitching. Junior Jaren Drummond has thrown two complete games (a shutout vs. Yuma and 5-3 win over Boulder Creek). Boulder Creek scored all three of its runs in the first. In the Pumas' second tournament game, Max Kraust gave up two early runs and went away a complete-game, 12-2 winner over Pinnacle.
Offensively, three- or four-hit games have come from the bats of Alex Burridge, Max Arredondo, David Walker, Wil Schommer and Chris Spetz as the Pumas have tallied 32 runs in three games.
The only other double-digit seed to go unbeaten in the 5A-II tourney was Marcos de Niza back in 2007. Marcos de Niza ended up winning all five of its games (defeating the No. 5, 13, 1 and 4 seeds and knocking off No. 2 seed Desert Mountain for the title. Thus far Perry has run-ruled the No. 5 seed, the No. 4 seed and topped No. 1 seed Boulder Creek.
Perry finished third behind Desert Ridge and Mountain Pointe this season in the 5A East Valley Region, a region home to five 5A-I schools and two 5A-II. As of Tuesday morning, Desert Ridge is still alive in the 5A-I tournament loser's bracket. Mountain Pointe is one of two unbeaten teams in 5A-I (Hamilton is the other).
