The only two 5A Fiesta Region qualifiers for the 5A-I state baseball tournament this season were Hamilton and Brophy. They are making the rest of the region proud after Tuesday night's second round.
No. 9 seed Brophy made a sweep of 5A-I Pool A winner's bracket games by knocking off No. 1 seed Mesquite, 5-3, at Camelback Ranch.
Brophy rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the sixth to tie the game at 2 on hit by Dan Winkler. Then in the top of the seventh Brophy batted around and scored three times, taking the lead on an RBI single by John Rapisarda and getting a couple insurance runs on a two-run single by Winkler.
Mesquite outhit Brophy 11-8, but hit into two double plays and had two runners on in three different innings with no outs and didn't score. Zach Davies socked a two-run homer in the fifth to give Mesquite its only lead of the night (2-1) in the fifth.
Brophy advances to the winner's bracket of Pool A on Saturday. The Broncos face Hamilton at 7 p.m. at Camelback Ranch Stadium. Mesquite next plays on Thursday in an elimination game against Highland at 7 p.m. at Camelback Ranch Stadium.
