Gilbert had trouble making throws from pitcher to first on Saturday and it cost the the Tigers plenty of runs adn extended innings. To offset the throwing woes, however, the 6th-seeded Tigers launched four homers and rallied from behind three times to nip No. 11 Corona del Sol, 12-11, on Saturday in the first round of the 5A-I state baseball tournament at Gilbert.
Drew Stankiewicz's long single to center drove in the game winner with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Gilbert catcher Nathaniel Causey continued his torrid, late-season hitting with two homers and drove in five runs. Causey hit a grand slam April 21 against Mesa Mtn. View and blasted a walk-off slam this past Wednesday to beat Perry. Dustin Peterson and Greg Esquibel also homered for Gilbert. Gilbert faces No. 14 Dobson, a 9-7 upset winner over No. 3 seed Desert Ridge, on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Corona visits Desert Ridge on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a loser's bracket game.
