Taylor Thompson scored 34 points Thursday night to lead The Gregory School over Valley Union 51-18. The victory gave the Hawks (8-1) a 3-0 record in the 1A South Region. The 34-33 loss came against 3A foe Sahuarita in the preseason Boyd Baker Tournament.

The one blemish on the Hawks record was more than balanced by a 60-50 win at San Carlos on Tuesday night. The Braves made a Division V semifinal appearance last year and Thompson scored 39 points in that win on Tuesday.

“We are having a good year and we beat San Carlos but we need to stay focused especially after the break,” Thompson said. “It will be crunch time for the state playoffs.”

Thompson has 865 career points but the senior missed her sophomore year and played on the boy’s team at The Gregory School due to low numbers. At her scoring rate, one would have to assume she would be somewhere around 1,400 career points with a shot at 2,000 had that not occurred.

“I’m trying to come out my senior year strong and get my averages up,” Thompson added.  “We have a new coach and he’s helping me on and off the court. It’s going to be a good year.”

Former Ironwood Ridge head coach Josh Dickinson replaced longtime head coach Dr. Michelle Berry over the summer.

Thompson has been fielding college offers from the state of Washington, from California, New York and the Chicago area as well from small colleges in Arizona.

In the win over Valley Union (1-7, 0-3), Chiara Gloesslein added 10 points to the 34 scored by Thompson. Jaclyn Garcia and Mari Lou Esquer scored four points each to lead Blue Devils.

The Gregory School hosts Patagonia next Tuesday and will take part in the Northwest Desert Classic during the winter break while Valley Union will play in the Tombstone Classic during the break.
