Highland girls hoops coach picks up win No. 778

There have been prettier wins in Highland girls basketball coach Miner Webster's career, but all he was concerned with after Tuesday's 37-34 win over Westview was the effort he received from his young squad. The clinching points were two bottom-of-the-net free throws by freshman Ariana Madanski with 29 seconds left.

The win was more significant than Webster gave it as it enabled the longtime Highland/Gilbert High girls coach to tie Winslow's legendary mentor Don Petranovich with 778 wins. That's the best in the state all-time in the girls game.

"I wish we had more offense, but these girls gave a great effort," Webster said. "We only scored eight points (10 actually), and still won. I guess that could be good or bad. They are working hard, and we have a lot of work to do."

Highland is 2-0 after two games to begin the season in its own Lady Hawk Invitational being contested at Highland and Mesquite highs schools. Highland next plays Friday at 10 a.m. against Desert Vista, Webster's first shot at the record triumph. Senior Alyssa Navarrete led  HIhgland with eight points and sophomore Mattie Lamb added seven.
