D-II swim-dive: Chaparral wins boys and girls titles

The Division II boys and girls swim and dive meet turned out golden for Chaparral standouts Ryan Hoffer, Taylor Ruck and Emma Broome as they led the Firebirds to team titles on Saturday at Skyline Aquatic Center.

Hoffer, a senior, Ruck, a junior, and Broome, a senior piled up four gold medals each. Hoffer re-set state records he set in winning the 50-yard free and 100 fly as well as a leg in each of the 200 and 400 free relays. Hoffer's time in the 50 free was 19.34 ripping past his former record of 19.53. He won a 50 free title for the fourth time. In the fly he swam 46.90, easily besting last year's time of 47.47.

Ruck prevailed in the 100 free and 200 free and swam legs of the 200 free and 400 free relays that were also winners. Her time of 49.29 in the 100 is a state record as is her time this year in the 200 (1:46.00). She also holds the 500 free record set last yeawr. Broome won the 100 fly and 100 back to go with a leg in each of the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay wins.

Coming in with three golds was Chaparral senior Gabriella Fagan. She won the 50 free and anchored the 200 relay and 400 relay teams to victory.

Chaparral notched the boys title with 345.5 points to slip past Catalina Foothills (312). Salpointe was third with 179.5. Chaparral's girls won handily with 404 points and swept first-place finishes in all the relays. Arcadia a distant second (266.5). Catalina Foothills was third for the gals with 198.

The only other boys individual, multi-event gold medalist was Catalina Foothills senior Brooks Fail. Fail captured the 200 free and 500 free. Rounding out the individual winners: Catallina Foothills Sam Mulay (200 IM), Arcadia's Clay Stoddard (100 free), Chaparral's Matthew LeBlanc (100 breast) and Liberty's Troy Bills (100 back). An important piece to the team title for Chaparral was Braden Huffman's triumph in diving. Notre Dame Prep won the 200 medley relay.

The rest of the girls individual champions: Arcadia's Savanna Carlson (200 IM) and Sydney Carlson (500 free); Campo Verde's Kati Hage (100 breast) and Shadow Mountain's Jennifer Cheetham (diving)..
