Chandler rolls into state football quarterfinals

November 5, 2016 by Jeff Sullivan, Arizona State University

The Chandler Wolves defeated the Basha Bears Friday night 48-6 in the first round of the 6A Conference football playoffs.

Chandler made a statement and put away the Bears early with their offensive onslaught, going up by four touchdowns in the first quarter.

"That's what we wanted to do," sophomore quarterback Jacob Conover said. "To put up a performance like that against this team feels pretty good."

Conover was nearly perfect from the field, playing well above his years.

Through the air, on the ground and also providing great distance in punts, Conover was the game's best all-around player.

The result, a No. 2 seed handling a No. 15 seed with ease, was not a surprise to many, but Chandler head coach Shaun Aguano still thinks his team gained a lot of valuable experience.

"I really like how we played," Aguano said. "We executed our game plan and we were able to control a lot of aspects of the game. Our focus was to limit their passing attack, and I feel we did an outstanding job of that."

The only hiccup for the Wolves was a deep ball from Basha's Ryan Kelley to senior wideout Terrell Brown in the third quarter, who was able to sneak past Chandler's secondary.

That play was Basha's only score but was capped off by a failed two-point conversion attempt.

With a running clock set early in the second half, Chandler punched its ticket to the second round with little resistance.

With Basha trading turnovers and punts for Chandler touchdowns, the Bears had no chance at recovering.

Chandler senior running back T.J. Green was glad to see his team do so well.

"It's fun playing in games like this," Green said. "Now on to the next one. I can't wait."

Up next, the Wolves host No. 10 Desert Vista on Nov. 10th in the quarterfinals.
