Westview RB Vasko is one of the state's best
November 3, 2016 by Jacob Franklin, Arizona State University
Standing at 5-foot-7, Westview High School’s senior running back Tyler Vasko does not have the stature of a typical star running back, but he sure plays like one.
Over the last two years, Vasko has piled up 3,981 yards on the ground and has punched the ball into the end zone 44 times. Yet, he has no NCAA offers.
Vasko does have offers from Arizona Christian University, Scottsdale Community College and Glendale Community College, though. He does not know where he is going at this moment.
Vasko has been Westview’s starting running back for the last two years and is a four-year varsity veteran.
“It has been an honor to be coached by these head coaches,” Vasko said. “These teams, and these guys, it’s been an honor playing for this school.”
Vasko is currently the state's leading rusher and is averaging 196.3 rushing yards per game.
“Any time we play on Friday nights, everybody in the stadium knows the ball is going to number 10,” Westview head coach Nick Gehrts said. “It’s no surprise. He opens up the run game for us, but then he opens up the pass game as well.”
Don't let Vasko's height fool you. At 200 pounds, he can pack a whallop.
But what makes Vasko dangerous is the multitude of ways in which he goes around defenders.
During his high school career, he has rushed for more than 200 yards in a game seven times and more than 300 yards three times. Just as impressive, Vasko has had three games in his career with five rushing touchdowns.
Vasko admits that the touchdowns are more memorable.
“After the touchdowns, it’s just so hype,” Vasko said. “The team is just so excited. Anybody that scores, everybody is excited for the touchdown to be scored. It’s a great atmosphere.”
However, while people may recognize Vasko for his abilities on the field, off the field Vasko is as humble as they come.
He attributes all of his success to the offensive line and his coaches. He does not want to stand in the spotlight.
However, that does not stop his teammates from giving him credit as well.
“His success keeps us going. He gives us a lot of credit, and I want to give him some credit because he’s a beast,” senior offensive lineman Alec Williams said. “We do what we do for him.”
Football came at an early age for Vasko.
He started playing when he was just six years old.
“I went to a lot of my uncles and cousins’ games when I was little,” Vasko said. “I thought it was a lot of fun. I was sitting up in the stands just wanting to play, and I was excited to play.”
Football is not the only big thing in his life.
Vasko spends his life outside of football working out at a CrossFit gym his uncle co-owns, hanging out with his teammates and spending time with his family.
But for right now, it is playoff season and Vasko, plus the rest of the Westview Knights football team, are preparing to take on the No. 8 seed Desert Ridge on Friday.
“Everybody is talking about either playing D. Ridge or playing somebody competitive,” Vasko said. “It’s gonna be a good first round.”
