State football playoff brackets released

October 29, 2016 by Jacob Franklin, Arizona State University

The Arizona Interscholastic Association released the state football brackets for the 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A Conferences Saturday during its annual playoff show on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM and azpreps365.com.

Famous Dave's BBQ in Mesa hosted the event.

The first round of the playoffs for those conferences begin Nov. 5 and will run until the championship round on Nov. 26. The AIA also announced the state championship site for the 4-6A conference championship games, University of Phoenix Stadium, which will host three AIA championship football games in one day for the first time.

In 6A, Mountain Pointe High and Chandler claimed the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectivley. Mountain Pointe beat Chandler 52-7 on Sept. 8, but, since that game, Mountain Pointe lost a couple of key starters to injury.

Some of the first round intriguing matchups in 6A include No. 9 Westview High School versus No. 8 Desert Ridge, No. 13 Red Mountain High at No. 4 Skyline High and No. 14 Valley Vista High at No. 3 Perry High.

“It’s pretty wide open,” Westview head coach Nick Gehrts said. “I think Mountain Pointe is the clear cut favorite, but it’ll be interesting.”

The 5A bracket, however, may feature some of the best first round matchups.

Undefeated Cienega High took the No. 1 seed, but the matchup between No. 13 Verrado High School and No. 4 Desert Edge is shaping up to be one of the best games.

In their regular season finale, Verrado squeaked by Desert Edge 6-3 in double overtime.

Another interesting matchup is No. 12 Liberty at No. 5 Centennial. The teams faced off Friday, when Centennial bested Liberty 23-7.

Saguaro High School has won six state championships in the last ten years, so it came as no surprise that the Sabercats snagged the No. 1 seed in the 4A bracket. The Sabercats are heavily favored to win the 4A state championship, so it’ll be up to teams such as second-seeded Higley High to put an end to the Sabercats reign.

Higley lost to Saguaro 49-15 earlier this year on Sept. 9.

A 9-1, Sunrise Mountain team found itself in the No. 3 seed, followed by Salpointe Catholic, Marcos de Niza, Catalina Foothills, Cactus and Peoria. In the 3A bracket, Show Low High ran away with the number one spot with a 10-0 record and will face No. 16 seed Page High.

The 3A bracket also features a rematch of a 2015 state title game, No. 10 Pusch Ridge Christian Academy at No. 7 Northwest Christian. Pusch Ridge won that game 14-7.

Finally, Round Valley High School, one of the preseason favorites in the 2A, finished the season with a 10-0 record and also grabbed a No. 1 seed. Santa Cruz High and Thatcher High School came away with the second and third seeds, respectively, in 2A.
