The Perry Pumas defeated the Hamilton Huskies for the first time in school history.

Perry spoiled the home team's Senior Night, throttling Hamilton 55-21 and handing Hamilton its worst home defeat since 2014, according to Max Preps. From the start, Perry didn't bend.  

The defense forced two three-and-outs and held Hamilton scoreless in the first quarter. Perry’s offense also did its job, building a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Perry didn't take the foot off the gas the rest of the game. From long touchdown throws by Purdy or getting turnovers on the defensive side, Perry came up with countless big plays throughout the game.

Perry forced a fumble on fourth down and created three interceptions, two of them by sophomore David Eppinger. The Perry cornerback also shut down one of Hamilton’s top receivers, senior Chancellor Brewington.

For Perry head coach Preston Jones, this was a win that many did not see coming.

“We got teachers. We got neighbors. We got all these people that automatically assume when we play all mighty Hamilton we don’t have a chance,” Jones said. “We are down 14 before we start.”

Jones believes a win such as this makes a statement and can start changing the perception and psyche of Perry’s football team. 

Purdy made an impression of his own with five touchdown passes and a long rushing touchdown for 43 yards. He threw for 449 yards and had 58 yards on the ground.

He was in sync with his receivers, including sophomore Colby Dickie and senior Nate James, who had a combined five touchdown receptions.  

“Day in and day out we are practicing with the receivers and running 7-on-7s,” Purdy said. “The credit goes to the offensive line. Without them nothing opens up.”

Purdy stood in pocket and delivered long plays throughout the game.

Every passing touchdown play was at least 30 yards or longer, with the longest touchdown going to Dickie for 73 yards in the third quarter.

Next week, Perry (8-1 overall, 2-1 section) and Hamilton (6-3 overall, 1-2 section) will continue to fight for playoff position. Perry will face its rival, the Basha Bears.

Hamilton takes on its long-time rival, the Chandler Wolves.
