Corona del Sol extends game win streak to 16

October 20, 2016 by Ariana Vallejo, Arizona State University

The Aztecs of Corona del Sol continued their win streak Wednesday night, as they rallied around each other to defeat Gilbert High 25-16, 29-27, 25-16.

Corona del Sol extended its unbeaten game streak to 16. The Aztecs came out strong in the first set, but Gilbert didn't go down without a fight.

Gilbert's blocking was on point against the Azctecs' leading hitters, including Emma West. During a break, both teams cheered loudly, raising the intensity between two of the state's top volleyball programs.

The second set saw a lot of great rallies. Gilbert senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Lines put her serving and spiking to use to help tie the game, 25-25. The teams then exchanged points before Brooke Nuneviller had two consecutive kills and Madi Reum finished the set with an ace.

“As a team we need to side out and talk a little more, especially on chaos balls that just drop,” Nuneviller said.

Corona del Sol kept the momentum in the third set, when the Aztecs fixed their mistakes, called for the ball more and dived for everything.

Gilbert committed too many errors, allowing Corona del Sol to walk away victorious.

Corona del Sol now holds a record of 7-0 in its section and 32-5 overall. It'll play Gilbert again Thursday night before hosting Highland and ending the season against another team fighting for the section title, Mountain Pointe.

The goal for Corona del Sol is to clean up some of the mental mistakes.

“Most physical mistakes are mental mistakes," coach Ben Maxfield said. "They’re a good team. The biggest difference was we didn’t have any aces in the second set until the end and that’s what we need to have.”
