Central overpowers turnover prone Camelback

September 24, 2016 by Harley Yearout, Arizona State University

The Central High School Bobcats shut out the Camelback Spartans 46-0 Friday night.

The Spartans struggled to take care of the ball, fumbling the ball three times just in the second half. Central running back Tommy Works was a force, finishing with more than 100 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

“I felt pretty great,” said Works after the victory.
Central dominated the game from the start, returning the opening kick 70 yards for a touchdown.

Central went for the 2-point conversion, a pass from quarterback Rico Davis to Casey Clanton, that gave the Bobcats an 8-0 lead.
Two possessions later, Davis threw a 52-yard touchdown strike to give Central a two score lead.
In the next possession for Central, Davis threw a screen pass to Clanton for a 30-yard gain. On the next play, Works ran the ball in for a 5-yard touchdown.

He also ran in the ensuing 2-point conversion, giving the Bobcats a 22-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Spartans punted three times and turned the ball over on downs during their first four drives.

Camelback took over at Central's 5-yard line after Central's punter was ruled down before punting the football away.
The offense stalled and Camelback head coach Joseph Brissette sent the field goal unit out, only to have the kick blocked. Central’s Works recovered the ball and ran 45 yards to the opponent's 31-yard line.
Works wound up scoring on a 29-yard touchdown run off the turnover. The Bobcats converted a lengthy 12-yard 2-point conversion to make the score 30-0 heading into halftime.
On its first drive of the second half, Cambelback fumbled. Central recovered the fumble around midfield, and three plays later Davis threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Roger Hernandez.

Another 2-point conversion gave the Bobcats a 38-0 lead. On the next Camelback drive, the Spartans fumbled again and Central recovered the football.

“It was too many turnovers,” said Camelback wide receiver Shawn Charles about why his team lost. “We get into too many arguments out there on the field. Nobody is together”

For Central, Works, who scored three touchdowns, and his teammates were certainly on the same page.

“Personally, I wish I could’ve done better,” Works said. “But it’s a team sport and my team played good.”

“We were just a more talented football team,” Central coach Jon Clanton said after the game.

Camelback will look to bounce back against 1-5 South Mountain next weekend.

Looking to next week for the Bobcats, Clanton said that his squad has its work cut out against Alhambra despite a 3-game win streak.

“We haven’t beat Alhambra in six years or five years,” he said. “Our kids are excited.”
