The stands were completely full and the energy high starting from the very first serve of the match.
Corona Del Sol entered the match with a 13-match win streak, including a huge championship victory at the Westwood tournament this past weekend.
The girls played a 6A Conference match Tuesday against two-time defending state champ Phoenix Desert Vista. It was a big match for Corona Del Sol, but it went in with a lot of momentum and confidence.
Corona Del Sol jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first game and never looked back during its 25-12, 25-10, 25-15 home victory.
Key Corona del Sol players of the match included senior middle blocker Jessica Murphy, senior outside hitter Erica Ronda, senior opposite hitter Emma West, and junior outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller.
Corona Del Sol showed no weaknesses on the court. Its communication kept it organized, and it committed minimal mistakes.
The second set was dominated by the offense, with West having three kills as well as Nuneviller. Behind them was Lauren Forte, a senior middle blocker, with two kills.
Going into the third set, Corona del Sol’s momentum was at an all-time high as it went for the sweep of the defending state champ. With the offense and defense clicking, Corona del Sol finished off the final set with a 25-15 win.
The huge win over the two-time state champion should boost Corona del Sol's confidence even more.
At the Westwood tournament, Corona del Sol beat one of its biggest conference foes, Hamilton, which is the only school that defeated Corona Del Sol (16-1) this season.
“We ended up in the finals with Hamilton, which kind of felt like state, because I feel like if we don’t mess up, and if we stay consistent, then it will be us and Hamilton,” senior defensive specialist Camryn Tucker said.
Since Tucker's team is comprised of mostly juniors and seniors and only one freshman, the chemistry is there. They have been building a championship caliber team for three years.
“They’re good friends," Corona del Sol Ben Maxfield said. "They enjoy each other off the court, so on the court they are able to talk to each other in a way that makes them better,”
The girls also want to preform well for Maxfield, whom they admire.
“Our coach is amazing at encouraging us, and it’s all just about volleyball with him," Ronda said. "He really cares and truly believes in us."
