Busy weekend for East Valley invitationals

The 25th annual Tournament of Champions Volleyball Invitational hosted by Westwood High and three other schools is set for Friday Sept. 16 and Saturday Sept. 17.
Thirty-six teams are competing Friday and Saturday at Westwood, Mesa, Highland and Skyline high schools in pool play. Matches -- four per team - are to be played Fridaybeginning at noon and two more on Saturday. starting at 9 a.m. The tournament will be broken up into bracket play for Saturday afternoon's action.
Saturday afternoon's bracket play begins at approximately 1 p.m. The elite bracket (top 9 teams) will be held at Westwood with the other brackets of nine played at Mesa, Highland and Skyline. The bracket finals should begin between 5 and 6 p.m..
These are the pool assignements for Friday and Saturday:
Westwood HS -- Desert Vista, Corona del Sol, Mountain Pointe, Mountain Ridge, Liberty, Desert Mountain, Prescott, Desert Ridge and Westwood. Mesa HS: Notre Dame Prep, Millennium, Horizon, Mesa, Saguaro, Pinnacle, Thunderbird, Queen Creek and Marana Mtn. View. HIghland HS: Gilbert, Basha, Mesa Mtn. View, Tucson, Highland, Boulder Creek, Red Mountain, ironwood, American Leadership. Skyline HS: Hamilton, Sunnyslope, Centennial, Chaparral, Ironwood Ridge, Deer Valley, Marcos de Niza, Skyline, Gilbert Christian.
Cross country starts bright and early Saturday Sept. 17 at the 28h annual Ojo Rojo Invitational at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler. Twenty-five teams are entered in the conventionally scored meet. Defending champions are Chandler girls and Corona del Sol boys.
Teams entered are: Alhambra, Arcadia, Arizona College Prep, Basha, Benjamin Franklin, Brophy, Canyon del Oro, Casa Grande, Casteel, Centennial, Chandler, Chaparral, Corona del Sol, Desert Edge, Desert Ridge, Gilbert, Horizon, Horizion Honors, Maricopa, Paradise Valley, Rincon University, Saguaro, Seton Catholic, Vista Grande, Williams Field.
One of the top swimming meets of the regular season is also set for Saturday September 17 at Chandler High's Aquatic Center located on the campus of Chandler HS.
Fifty teams are entered competing for team titles and qualifying times for this year's state meet. Swimming begins at 9 a.m. and continues throughout the rest of the day. Defending team champions are Desert Vista's girls and Brophy Prep.
