XC: Chandler girls, Campo Verde boys take titles

Chandler's girls made it back-to-back titles Saturday morning while Campo Verde's boys stepped up and captured their portion of the 22nd annual Chandler XC Invitational at seasonably muggy Tumbleweed Park.

Chandler, last year's Division I state champ, saw many of its state placers do well in the first invitational of the season for the Wolves and most schools. The meet utilizes a different format than the typical one with four races by class -- freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. The top finisher in each race scores for their school.

Chandler's girls finished with 15 points, led by sophomore Morgan Foster. Foster turned in the top time of the day for the girls, crosssing the finish at 18 minutes, 45 seconds. Foster bettered her runner-up time at the meet last year by 29 seconds. Teammate Ava Hamilton took second in the junior race, Brooke Eversden was fourth in the freshman race and Gabrielle Enns took eighth in the senior race. Sophomore Becca Taylor finished just behind Foster in their race. All of those runners except Eversden ran at the state meet last year.

Highland was second in the team chase with 22 points and Mesa Mountain View was third with 49.

The other girls' race winners were Highland freshman Caroline McLeskey (19:20), Campo Verde junior Alaina Kautz (19:54) and Desert Mountain senior Alexis Hocken (19:10). Hocken was 27th at last year's D-I state meet. Kautz flipped places with Chandler's Hamilton. Hamilton was first in 2015 and Kautz second in the sophomore race.

Campo Verde registered the lone indivdual repeat champ in unseating Perry as boys team champ -- Rylan Stubbs. Stubbs, a sophomore, won with a time of 16:58. That shaved 16 seconds off his 2015 time at the meet. Joining in Campo Verde's scoring were freshman Zac Whaley (third), senior Kyle Moore (third) and junior Zack Prusse (sixth). Mesa Mountain View was second (26 points) and Brophy Prep (28) was third.

The best time of the day on the boys side belonged to Mesa Mountain View junior Carson Klepinger. Klepinger's time was 16:04. Kepinger was third in the sophomore race last year and capped his season with a 25th-place finish at state in D-I.

Rounding out the boys winners were Corona del Sol's Liam Kovatch, who edged out teammate Slade Sumners for the senior crown. Winning time was 16:20. Kovatch and Sumners finished in the top 25 at D-I state last year, -- Sumners was 11th and Kovatch 21st.  The freshman title went to Highland's Caden Resendez with a very respectable clocking of 16:42.
