No. 11 Chandler rallied for two runs in the fifth inning and survived a seventh-inning scare to defeat No. 6 Xavier Prep, 3-1, in the second round of the Division I state softball tournament at Xavier.

Kate Gross and Mona Noriega produced back-to-back, two-out hits in the fifth to put Chandler up 2-1. The Wolves added a run in the top of the seventh for starting pitcher Gabby Baker. Baker surrendered an unearned run in the first inning and was sharp to the finish save two batters. With two outs  she allowed a single and double putting the tying runs on base. Baker induced a ground out to short to end the game.

Baker allowed six hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter. Chandler advances to the double elimination, elite eight where it faces Deser Ridge on Thursday night at Rose Mofford Softball Complex.

It's the first time Chandler has advanced to the elite eight since big school softball switched to a double-elimination format in 2006.

DESERT RIDGE 2, CENTENNIAL 1: Bailey Klitzke capped a monster day with a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh to score Jordan St. Germain as the No. 3 Jaguars eliminated the No. 14 Coyotes at Desert Ridge. Klitzke pitched a complete game, allowing two hits, a walk and striking out 14. Katie Reid drove in the tying run in the sixth with a single. Centennial scored its run in the fourth on a home run by Dren Meginnis. Meginnis had both Centennial hits.

CAMPO VERDE 3, BOULDER CREEK 0: Myka Sutherlin alllowed five hits and struck out seven and Brenna Scudellari  blasted a leadoff homer in the first inning to pace the No. 7 Coyotes to a victory over the No. 10 Jaguars at Campo Verde. Sutherlin also contributed two hits. Campo got insurance runs in the sixth on a wild pitch and throwing error. Campo Verde moves on to the double-elimination bracket of eight to face Pinnacle on Thursday.

DESERT VISTA 2, HORIZON 1: Mara Kemmer's two-run triple with two outs in the fifth inning propelled the top-seeded Thunder past the stubborn No. 17 Huskies at Desert Vista. Kemmer's hit made winner of senior Brooke Hughes, who locked up with Horizon freshman Morgan Leinstock in an outstanding pticher's duel.  Hughes pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10. Leinstock also allowed just four hits. Neeley Bell drove in Horizon's run

PERRY 4, RED MOUNTAIN: 1 Saige Stutz scattered six hits and Piper Lujan, Tatum Johnson and Hannah Johnson contributed RBI to lead the No. 9 Pumas over the No. 8 Lions at Red Mountain. Lujan's RBI single in the fifth broke a 1-1 tie and Perry added two runs in the seventh. Stulz gave up the only run in the first and managed to escape a few jams along the way. Red Mountain left 10 runners on base. Perry moves on to double elimination elite eight on Thursday and faces top-seed Desert Vista. 

HAMILTON 6, CHAPARRAL 3: Taylor Gindlesperger knocked in three runs with a single and two sacrifice flies and Madison Seigworth threw five shutout innings to lead the No. 5 Huskies past the No. 12 Firebirds at Hamilton.

SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR 12, QUEEN CREEK 2:  Stevie McLemore had two hits, scored three times and drove in five runs as defending champion and No. 4 Eagles crushed the Bulldogs at O'Connor. Maddie Westmoreland and Grace Lyons drove in two runs apiece for SDO. Emma Vesely earned the victory going six innings. O'Connor moves on to play Hamilton in the elite eight on Thursday.

PINNACLE 7, MOUNTAIN RIDGE 0: Pitcher CC Cook continued to tear through oppoing lineups as the No. 2 Pioneers eliminated last year's runners-up, the 15 Lions at Pinnacle. Cook tossed a four-hitter and struck out 10. Jackie Kelley, Nicole Amodio and Marissa Schuld led with offense with two RBI each. Pinnacle broke open a tight game in the fifth, scorig five runs to extend a 2-0 lead. Mountain Ridge's Giselle Juarez struck out nine, but was touched for 10 hits and all seven runs.
