Boulder Creek's boys volleyball team isn't slowing down for anyone.

The top team in the Division I power-rankings proved its worth this weekend, capping the two-day Brophy Invitational on Saturday with a two-set victory over Highland in the title match at Brophy Prep. Scores were 25-13, 25-22. Boulder Creek improved its overall record to 34-1. Its only loss is a two-setter in a prestigious invitational two weeks ago in Las Vegas.

Coach Troy Dueling's squad competed with seven of the top 15 teams in D-I (according to the power-rankings) Friday and Saturday and came through it unscathed. -- no different than its regular-season exploits prior to the weekend. Boulder Creek posted an 8-0 record and swept all its foes in two games -- Highland twice, Mesa Mtn. View twice, Sandra Day O'Connor, Brophy, Hamilton and Desert Vista were the Jaguars' victims.

"We're really proud to win this tournament," Dueling said. "It's the premiere tournament in the state next to the state tournament. It's our first time winning it so we're happy to get our name on the board."

Boulder Creek, which won the Wolf Howl at Chandler the opening weekend of the season in March, repeated an invitational triumph with its usual brand of solid play. The Jaguars don't have a superstar, just an experienced group that makes few mistakes and defends exceptionally well. Boulder Creek played the tournament without one of its top players, senior hitter Liam Santa Cruz, who was resting a sore knee. Santa Cruz was chosen most vaubale player of the Wolf Howl and has led the team in kills most of the season.

"I liked that we pretty much refused to let the ball drop," Dueling said. "We play emotionless and just look forward to playing the next point. We had some other players step up in the tournament so everyone is ready to contribute."

Dueling handed out praise to junior hitter Brian Endres, who helped fill the void for Santa Cruz as well as the effort of sophomore Boston Whitman.

In the title match against Highland, Boulder Creek was led on the attack by junior outside Patrick Ross with 13 kills and senior Bryce Whitman with six kills. Setter Andrew deLeon handed out 26 assists. Defensively libero Grady O'Neill had 14 digs and was outstanding throughout the tournament. He led the seven-member all-tournament team by being named most valuable players. Ross and middle blocker Ryan Serrano were also all-tourney choices for the Jaguars. Rounding out the all-tournament team were O'Connor setter Ian Fields, Gilbert hitter Onias Snuka, Hamilton right side Arian Bunthanom and Desert Vista middle Deric Hancock.

Highland, coached this year for the first time by longtime Gilbert High coach Jeff Grover, entered bracket play Saturday as the No. 7 seed among the eight teams. The Hawks were 1-1-2 in pool play and were 3-2 on Saturday with wins over Hamilton, SDO and Gilbert. Both losses in bracket play were to Boulder Creek. 

"A lot of teams behind us have only one or two losses," Dueling said of the power-ranking records. "We haven't lost one yet, and people think there is a big gap between us and everyone else. I don't see it that way. We have to keep focused, and playing at a high level."
