Kansas-bound Mitch Lightfoot picked up Gatorade Arizona Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors Thursday morning.

The 6-9, 220-pound Gilbert Christian senior averaged 22.5 points and 11.7 rebounds per game and shot 65 percent this season. As a junior, Lightfoot led his team to a state title.

In the classroom, he carries a 3.73 grade point average.

Lightfoot is the first player from Gilbert Christian to receive the prestigious Gatorade honor and joins South Mountain’s Najiyyah Pack as this season’s recipients of the annual Arizona award.

“I have known Lightfoot since his middle school days and definitely a fan of his, except when he plays against us,” said Catalina Foothills High head coach Dough D’Amore in a press release from Gatorade. “We saw a lot of great teams but no player was as valuable and talented as him. I believe what separates him from all of the other candidates is his character and academic focus that makes him a complete student-athlete.”
