It does not seem to matter who the hitter is. Mountain Pointe baseball is bombarding the opposition with the long ball three weeks into the season.

Senior catcher Kevin Cron cranked out two more home runs, the second capping a 5-for-5 day at the plate Saturday, as Mountain Pointe outlsugged Mesa Mountain View, 16-10, on the first day of the Mesquite-Gilbert Baseball Invitational at Gilbert High School.

Cron's homer were his fifth and sixth this season in eight games. First baseman Joey Curletta got things started for Mountain Pointe with a three-run homer that highlighted a six-run, first inning. Even 5-foot-8 second baseman Sam Kingery, hitting in the eighth spot int he order, homered for the first time this season. Kingery drove in four runs.

"You kind of pick your poison with those two," Mountain Pointe coach Brandon Buck said. "As a team we're swinging it well. I think that's either 18 or 19 homers we've hit so far. One through nine in our order we have guys capable of running into one."

Cron, who collected five RBIs in the game and has Curletta and his five homers behind in the lineup, is picking up where he left off last season hitting.

"It's been a while," Cron said of the last time pitches to him haven't seemed like beach balls. "I've been seeing the ball well and capitalizing. I'm concentrating more this year on pitches I do get. I have to take advantage and still maintain patience."

Mountain Pointe (6-2) finished with 16 hits off  four Mountain View pitchers. Every Mountain Pointe starter had at least one hit.

Mountain View, which dropped to 8-3, had a four-game winning streak snapped with the loss. The Toros tried several times to rally from the 6-0 deficit in the first, cutting the deficit to 6-3 and 7-5 after three innings. Even down 13-5 after five, Mountain View pulled within 13-9 in the top of the sixth. The quick six in the first was just too much to overcome.

Mountain View ended the day with 13 hits, led by left fielder Travis Taylor's perfect day. Taylor was 4-for-4 with a double and the first home run of his career. Hayden Rogers, Colten Nielsen and Jake Keller added two hits apiece for the Toros.
