XC: 43rd Doug Conley crowns new champs all around

It was a clean sweep for new champions Saturday morning at the 43rd annual Doug Conley Cross Country Invitational.

And why not. With a new home and faster course new elite race champs were crowned as were team champs for both gender as nearly 2,000 runners competed in six races in steamy, conditions at Shalimar Country Club in Tempe.

Findng the winner's circle for the second week in a row and first time at Conley was Arcadia senior Megan Reniewicki. Reniewicki covered the three-mile course, markedly flatter compared to the last seven years of races at Rolling HIlls Golf Course, in 17 minutes, 15 seconds. Reniewicki prevailed the previous week at the Ojo Rojo Invite at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler.

"I felt pretty good and liked the flat course," Reniewicki, who had not raced at Conley before. missing out on the hilly layout there "It was really hot. I was hoping to run somewhere around 17:40. I was happy with my given the heat."

Behind Reniewicki were a pack of Wolves -- five Chandler Wolves finishing among the top 33 to win the team title with 78 points.  Freshman Morgan Foster (2nd) crossed the finish line at 18:03 followed by teammates Alexis Nichols (5th), Ava Hamilton (15th),  Mihajla Milovanovic (25th) and Gabrielle Enns (33rd). Chandler would have had six runners in the top 33 and an even better team score, but freshman Becca Taylor was unable to complete the race going down just a few meters from the finish. She would have had a top-10 finish. Taylor was taken to a hospital and likely will stay overnight for observation and to recuperate. Chandler features only one senior among its top six runners.

Runner-up in the elite girls team standings was Page (148) followed by Highland (154), Mesa Mountain View (160) and Chaparral (163). The rest of the elite girls top-10 finishers were Gila Ridge's Clara Haynes (3rd), Deer Valley's Kassidy Deardorff (4th), Ganado's Daangoiina Haven (6th), Chinle's Nikesha Eagleman (7th), Desert Mountain's Alesix Hocken (8th), Hopi's Jaeda Honani (9th) and Desert Mountain's Stephanie Stewart (10th).

The elite boys race title went to  Perry senior Cade Burks with a time of 15:25. That was just good enough to edge out Mesa Mountain View's senior Eric Simoneau (15:27). Burks had run twice previously at Conley and Rolling Hills, the most recent time last year. That race was one to forget. Burks was more than a minute behind last year's champion's winning time.

"I ran there my freshman and junior year," Burks said. "Last year I didn't run very well. This course is more to my liking and plays to my strength. I wanted to go out with the top group and stay with them. I did that, but near the end I started dropping. I was able to come back and get the lead for the last 600 meters or so."

Even though Mountain View fell short of winning the individual title, the Toros claimed  the team championship. In doing so they ended  Corona del Sol's two-year reign as champs. Mountain View's senior-domiated pack was better than the rest with Jacob Toller (6th), Mitchell Jacobson (9th), Carson Klepinger (13th) and Giovanni Waterman (45th) giving the Toros a score of 71. That bested Corona del Sol (105). Brophy (166), Tuba City (173) and Highland (205) rounded out the top five teams.

Other top 10 elite boys finishers were Brophy's Luke Mason (3rd), Buena's Manuel Olivo-Quinones (4th), Tubaa City's Albert Fuller (5th), Chinle's Santiago Hardy (7th), Hamilton's David Nelson (8th) and Corona's Slade Sumners (10th).

Most of the state's top runners head to Casa Grande on Friday Oct. 2 for the annual Desert Twilight Invite. That's the last huge meet of the year for most teams and indviiduals, who will start gearing up for state the final three weeks of October.
