Sept. 17-18 football at a glance
September 16, 2015 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365
If there is a light week in terms of overall matchups Division I through Division VI in 2015, this is that week. Still there are games worthy of a look. Some of these teams are still in the vetting process as to how good they really may be. Another week to try and figure some of them out.
Here's a glance at some of those contests this week (Thursday Sept. 17 and Friday Sept. 18):
THURSDAY SEPT. 17
Notre Dame Prep (1-2) at Thunderbird (3-0): Notre Dame is still finding its way under new coach Mark Nolan with a narrow win, a big loss and a one-point defeat in three tries as it visits TBird in a D-III matchup. The Saints have had a tough time on defense, allowing 33 points a game. Thunderbird is on a mission this season to return to the playoffs after a 5-5 season and so far, so good. Thunderbird is led by senior running backs Dominque King (six touchdowns) and Kaleb Hofer, who have combined for almost 700 yards rushing. Quarterback Andy Wittenwyler has been efficient, passing for 350 yards and four TDs.
FRIDAY SEPT. 18
Chaparral (2-1) at Perry (4-0): Perry is in the midst of another long winning streak to begin a season and faces its greatest test of the season in this D-I matchup. The Pumas record for consecutive wins is five (twice -- 2008 and 2010). Perry has faced Chaparral in the past when both were D-II and its been all Chaparral (five lopsided wins in five meetings). Chaparral gave Chandler High a battle two weeks ago so the Pumas have their hands full in this one. Perry has been paced by three sophomore skill-position players -- sophomores Cutter Hatch, Kenny Fultz and Brock Purdy. Hatch and Fultz lead the ground game and Purdy shares time with senior Gabe Tomaszewski at quarterback. They've combined to throw for 1,100 yards and 10 TDs in wins over Dobson, Mesquite, Mesa Mtn. View and Liberty. Chaparral got back in the win column last week beating D-III juggernaut Desert Edge. The Firebirds have been stingy on defense allowing 18 points a game to three very good offensive teams.
Sahuaro (2-1) at Corona del Sol (3-0): The schedule has been kind to Corona and the Aztecs have made the most of it with lopsided wins every week as they prepare for this D-II encounter with the Cougars. Sahuaro presents a decent challenge with its loss coming to D-III toughie Sabino. Sahuaro recovered from its loss to Sabino by thumping Canyon del Oro, 42-21, last week.
Mesquite (3-1) at Mesa (2-1): These former D-I schools meet for the first time in 11 years (and only the third time ever) as D-II opponents. Mesquite's loss was to unbeaten Perry while Mesa dropped its second game by a big margin to Highland after upsetting Red Mountain in its opener. Mesquite has won its last two, barely hanging on for a 14-13 win over Westwood. Mesquite rushed for another 193 yards. Mesa toppled Shadow Ridge last week after a bye week. Mesa is led by linebacker-running back Dylan Hendricks, who leads the team in tackles and scored rush and reception last week.
Queen Creek (2-1) at Williams Field (2-1): Doesn't matter what division these schools line up in against each other, it will be physical. They don't like each other and are not in the same section so this won't decide a section title in their new home of D-II. Their losses are to D-I programs and each has handled Campo Verde as an early, common opponent. Queen Creek is led by running back Gavin Danielson has averaged 27 carries a game so far to go with his 435 yards rushing. The Bulldogs stepped up the passing game last week with senior Kaleb Honea taking the controls and throwing for 222 yards in the win over Campo Verde. Williams Field graduated its top running backs and receiver so quarterback Weston Murphy is getting acquainted with a new set of is skill players, led by RB Aaron Mason and receivers Max Fine and Justis Stokes.
Desert Edge (1-2) at Peoria (2-1): Desert Edge is in the midst of a two-game losing streak, but there is no shame in those losses (Paradise Valley and Chaparral) as they return to D-III competition. It's the first multi-game losing streak for the Scorpions since they lost their 2010 finale and 2011 opener. Peoria is a perennial contender in D-III and the Panthers have battled back from a blowout loss to Sunnyslope to prevail twice and bring some confidence. Peoria will need it with Paradise Valley, Sunrise Mountain and Cactus following on the schedule.
Valley Christian (2-1) at American Leadership Academy (3-0): Valley Christain has struggled to be relevant in D-V football in recent years with a couple one-round playoff appearances but no postseason wins since 2009 (state-title season). Coach Jeff Rutledge is 14-10 in two-plus seasons as head coach. American Leadership Academy burst on the postseason scene last year as the No. 14 seed and lasted the first round with a loss to Thatcher. This year's team is rolling, but has tough games ahead with this one, Santa Cruz Valley and Tempe Prep in coming weeks. American Leadership Acadeemy is led by running back Jermiah Boyd, who has rushed for 515 yards and 10 TDs. Valley Christian is paced by sophomore Alijah Gammage, who is excelling at quarterback after a solid freshman year at receiver. Gammage has two prime targets -- Felix Benitez and Mason Goodell.
Tonopah Valley (3-0) vs. Paradise Honors (3-0) at Odyssey Institute: Tonopah Valley's downfall last season was not being able to hang with the private schools in D-V. They haven't faced any yet, but a couple will come with Arizona Lutheran and Scottsdale Christian in section battles.Tonoapah Valley relies on senior running back Arturo Tapia and sophomore quarterback Chris Davis for most of its production thus far. Paradise Honors thrives on running the ball with four backs rushing for 100 yards or more on the season. Leading the Panthers is junior RB Brandon Brown (299 yards).
Glendale Prep (4-0) at Valley Union (3-0): D-VI (eight-man football) boasts six unbeaten teams to date and these are two of them. Neither school has enclountered any trouble fashioning its victories. Offense rules the eight-man game and Glendale Prep has its share led by RB Jacob Thompson and QB Joey Balkisoon. Valley Union relies on QB Jose Gamez and RB Jaret Luzania, who are in their fourth seasons for the Blue Devils.
