With about three minutes left in Tolleson’s Class 5A Division Ii quarterfinal basketball game on Wednesday night (Feb. 23), a group of girls wearing pink T-shirts started singing.
“Na-na-na-nah, na-na-na-nah, hey, hey, hey, goooood-bye!’’
Tolleson coach Rich Brumbaugh turned around and told them, “Not quite yet. Maybe in a couple of minutes.’’
Still, he was happy to receive support. The singers were members of the school’s top-seeded girls basketball team, which one night earlier won its first-round game over No. 16 Glendale Deer Valley 70-38.
The boys players were there for that one, according to Brumbaugh, showing their support.
“That’s the way it should be, the teams supporting each other,’’ he said.
The boys are expected to cheer for the girls when they face No. 8 Phoenix Barry Goldwater at Tolleson on Friday night (Feb. 25). And the girls hope they will get another chance to sing on Saturday night (Feb. 26) when the eighth-seeded boys travel to face top-seeded Phoenix Pinnacle.
