Billed as a high-powered double header at Amphitheater High School, the third round of the Division II playoffs turned into a night of missed opportunities and errors. Plenty of errors.

No. 4 Vail Cienega run-ruled No. 12 Tucson High 14-0 in the first game on Thursday night and No. 2 Tucson Salpointe defeated No. 7 Oro Valley Canyon del Oro 12-4 in the nightcap.

The Badgers defeated No. 5 Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge 11-7 on Tuesday to get to the third round but a lot of that magic was gone when they took the field against Kayla Green and Cienega.

Green (17-5) limited Tucson to two hits and got out of her only jam with a strikeout after she loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch, fielder's choice and walk in the second inning.

"I wasn't hitting my spots against Sabino so I worked on that in practice," Green said. And I love my team for getting all those runs. It makes things easier."

The Bobcats scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, seven in the third and two more in the fourth. Even though the Badgers committed eight errors on the night, Cienega collected some timely hits and put the ball in play seemingly at will to cash in on the mistakes.

"They believe in themselves," explained head coach Eric Tatham. "They had doubts when the season started but it's good blend of young players and old and they know they have the talent."

The Bobcats got production from every spot in the lineup and centerfielder Shelby Kennedy set the Cienega single season stolen base record with 31 in the process. Hayley Kinseth (5-2) closed out the game in the fifth and Tucson went with three pitchers.

Nicole Zazueta, Taylor Ramirez and Mia Trejo all saw action from the circle for the Badgers.

Cienega (23-8) will face No. 9 Peoria Sunrise Mountain (27-5) on Tuesday and Tucson (17-14) will play top-seed Goodyear Desert Edge (28-3) in an elimination game on Saturday. Sunrise Mountain upset Desert Edge 10-3.

Game facts: Morghan Doughty is an assistant coach for the Bobcats. She was the centerfielder on the team's championship run of 2010 and her sister Abby Doughty is a freshman.

Canyon del Oro (30-6) left eight runners on base including a bases loaded opportunity in the third that could have been one of those turning points the Dorados are known for but,  instead, Salpointe (27-6) pitchers Delfina Morales (17-5) and Briana Aguilar (9-1) limited the Dorados to only four runs.

Morales (no relation) was given a huge cushion in the first inning thanks to three errors and a double by Aguilar. Canyon del Oro scored in the second but The Lancers responded with another to go up 4-1.

The Dorados loaded the bases in the third but could only manage one run to cut the lead down to 4-2 and a costly error by the Lancers helped CDO tie things up 4-4 heading into the fifth.

Then the wheels fell off.

Salpointe scored three in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the sixth and CDO couldn't respond. Six Lancer batters reached on hit-by-pitch and five of those runners scored.

Aguilar picked up the win after coming in for Morales and she helped her cause by going 3-3 with a double and three RBI.

"I was ready to go in because coach told me I might get a shot," Aguilar explained. "I don't know what was up with my hitting though," she joked.

"I was focused and relaxed and I saw the ball. I knew what I wanted to do," she added.

The Dorados battled back through the elimination bracket last year only to lose to Ironwood Ridge in the championship game but they showed it could be done after they won their 2012 title coming through the elimination bracket. In fact, the Dorados are the only D-II team to win a championship from the elimination bracket since the process began in 2012.

Randi Longville (17-3), Faith Orton (2-3), Gabby Blevins (0-0) and Gillian Shafe (4-0) made pitching appearances for the Dorados.

Amy Rocha won two state championships as a player at Salpointe and she would like nothing more than to add one as a coach.

"I've been waiting 19 years for this," Rocha said. "I want to win one for Phil (Gruensfelder) and for the program."

Now Salpointe's athletic director, Gruensfelder coached the Lancers to their second championship in 1996. That was Rocha's senior year. Rocha also had one as a freshman under current University of Arizona assistant coach Stacy Iveson in 1993.

A former Wildcat herself, Rocha knows what it take to get to the next level.

"They know the goal and the sacrifice it takes," Rocha added. "They have the mentality we have to have."

No. 2 Salpointe will face No. 3 Glendale Cactus on Tuesday, May 12 at Rose Mofford. Cactus knocked off No. 6 Tucson Sahuaro 3-0 to advance. Sahuaro will go up against Canyon del Oro on Saturday at Cherry Field in Tucson in an elimination game.

Game facts: Aguilar's aunt Marcie Aguilar also played for Arizona and freshman standout Yannira Acuña was part of the Sunnyside Little League World Series championship team from a couple of years ago. Acuña went 2-5 with an RBI double.
