The Tucson Lady Badgers are hosting the last softball invitational of the season comprised of "big schools" from Southern Arizona and it looks like the top teams will not be decided until pool play is over.

As of late Thursday night, only Tucson Catalina Foothills (2-0) and Nogales (3-0) have remained unbeaten through the first two days of pool play, although one of the victories for Nogales came via forfeit.

Casa Grande Vista Grande was on the verge on remaining untouched but the Spartans gave up five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to Tucson to drop that game 7-6.

Tucson had spotted Vista Grande an unearned run in the top of the first and another run in the fourth to fall back 2-0 before the school could mount any kind of offense.

Rita Diaz hit a solo shot to right field to score the Badger's first run in the bottom half of the fourth and Vanezza Caldera followed with a double and would later tie the game up on a passed ball.

Vista Grande took advantage of two more Badger miscues in the fifth to go back up 3-2 and the Spartans added three more in the top of the seventh with what appeared to be a safe 6-2 lead. Taco Cordova leadoff the top of the seventh with a double and Alyssa Valdez and Ali Belloc followed with back-to-back singles for Vista Grande.

Badger pitcher Taylor Ramirez induced a fly ball and a groundout to hold Vista Grande to one run but another error brought in two more runs.

Down 6-2, Tucson needed to get things going and Alizea Corday was hit-by-pitch to start the rally. Leighann Ballesteros reached on error to put two runners on but Corday was tagged out attempting to take third.

Ariana Longoria singled and then Micaela Rodriguez was hit to load the bases. Romy Sandoval followed with a fielder's choice to score Ballesteros but the Badgers were down to their last out down 6-3.

"I was thinking we needed to pick each other up," said Diaz on her approach to her next at bat. "I knew we definitely had a chance because we were so fired up and we had to keep it going."

Diaz kept the rally going with a double to the fence to score two more runs but, still, the Badgers were down 6-5 with two outs.

Caldera brought Tucson one step closer when she came up with a single that was mishandled in the outfield to score one more run. Caldera was able to move to second base on the error and the game as all tied up 6-6.

Vista Grande had dodged a bullet earlier in the day when they took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh against Vail Empire only to see the Ravens load the bases and score a run on a hit-by-pitch with two outs. A groundout saved the game in that case but the Badgers would not be denied.

Caldera moved to third on a passed ball and then a wild pitch brought her home for the winning run, 7-6.

Cordova picked up the loss for Vista Grande but she finished 2-4 at the plate with a double. Valdez also finished 2-4 with a double. Staci Ortega had Vista Grande's other double.

Ramirez won the game for Tucson with Diaz going 3-4 with a home run, double and three RBIs. Caldera went 3-3 with a sacrifice and a double. Longoria finished 3-4.

Pool play continues Friday at Cherry Field to determine the seeding for bracket play scheduled for Saturday.
