CDS's Wheeler, CDO's Doucet win at 42nd Conley XC Invite

Corona del Sol's Marcus Wheeler and Canyon del Oro's Bridget Doucet did some place-swapping on Saturday morning at the 42nd Doug Conley Cross Country Invitational.

Wheeler and Doucet, both of whom were runners-up in their respective races at the Ojo Rojo Invitational last week, found the winners circle in the 5K Elite races at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tempe.

Wheeler bounced back from a loss to Mesquite's Tyler Day to edge Day by 2.5 seconds and in the process helped lead Corona's boys to the Elite Invite team title. Wheeler's winning time was 15 minutes, 50.90 seconds. Day's time was 15:53.41. Finishing third through fifth were  Page's Jeffery Miller, Hamiton's Seamus White and Canyon del Oro's Tim Ronan.

"The difference from last week is the hills here," Wheeler said. "You have to work them just right. I stayed with the top guys and made a move after the second lap. I had to run smarter this week."

Corona won the elite team title for the second year in a row with 73 points. The Aztecs placers after Wheeler were Slade Sumners (6th), Alex Hart (12th), Liam Kovatch (25th) and Andrew Eversden (29th). Page was second with 107 points. Eversden made the big difference with hits 29th-place finish. Page's fifth runner was 70th.

Doucet, running without any teammates in her race, was a runaway winner. Doucet bested Corona's Kelly Naumann by 17 secconds. Naumann defeated Doucet last week at Ojo Rojo in Chandler, thanks in part to Doucet taking a wrong turn.

Doucet took about a minute to refresh herself after winning her race. And even though she had no teammates to encourage as other runners crossed the finish, she served as hostess to nearly every runner, congratulating them and handing them a cup of water. Doucet's winning time was 18:11.36. Rounding out the top five were Highland's Lauren Ellsworth, Chaparral's Ali Kallner and Vista Grande's Carissa Diaz.

Ellsworth's 3rd-place finish (2nd for scoring purposes) guided Highland to the top spot for the second year in a row in the Elite team standings. After Ellsworth the Hawks' finishers were Allyson Girard (5th), Adeline Montgomery (10th), Marisa Kennedy (23rd) and Mallory Menden (34th). Xavier was the runner-up with 90 points.

Champions in the other races contested Saturday were: Corona's Graham Eversden (JV boys), Xavier's Tara O'Malley (JV girls), Centennial's Quinten Nelson (Boys Invite) and Rincon's Lauren Phillips (Girls Invite). Marana Mountain View won the boys invite team title and Tempe High was girls invite champ.

Several top teams did not enter their top runners or chose not to compete in preparation for next week's Desert Twilight Invitational in Casa Grande. Among those were Division I Desert Vista boys and girls, Xavier and Division III Rio Rico, including defending Elite girls champ Alexandra Schadler.
